Look what is happening in Year 1!

Lots of knickers in Year 1!!

October 24, 2014 at 11:15 am

Phew! What a busy and exciting first half term we have had in Year 1. We have been on a trip to the woods and the theatre, made delicious soup using vegetables from our farm, found out lots about trees, been ‘scientists’ and done lots of literacy and maths. All the children will be ready for a rest during the holiday.

The children all thoroughly enjoyed watching ‘The Queen’s Knickers’. It was very entertaining. What was your child’s favourite part? In literacy this week all the children wrote an independent recount about the theatre trip. We will be using this piece of writing to help us assess what level your child is writing at. The children also did lots of other fun activities including creating their own pair of ‘knickers’ and re telling the story in their own little book. We have also heard all the children read individually this week. We are pleased with how much reading lots of the children are doing at home.

In maths we have been updating our individual assessments and seeing how much progress the children have made since September. We have also been doing lots of fun number bond activities – the children are beginning to recall the number bonds quickly. Number bond of the week is 7 + 3 = 10, 3 + 7 = 10.

In art the children have all created some lovely nature collages in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. Some children went outside and used objects to make their piece of art.

Thank you for all your support this half term. The comments on our blog are great and it is super to receive instant feedback on everything we are doing with your children.
Have a lovely half term holiday and see you all in November!

Another fantastic week in Year 1!

October 17, 2014 at 10:55 am

The children all had great fun exploring 2D and 3D shapes in our maths lessons. They created 2D shape robots and used an app called ‘Geoboards’ on the iPads to make different shapes.

The children learnt the names of the shapes and began to use the correct vocabulary to describe them including corners, sides, vertices. Maybe your child could be a shape detective at home and see how many shapes they can find? We have still been doing lots of counting and practising forming our numbers and ‘Number bond of the week’ is 6 + 4 = 10, 4 + 6 = 10.

In literacy the children have been learning how to write a recount using time words such as first, next, after that. They all wrote a recount based in their visit to the nature reserve. All the children have a personal literacy target and they all tried hard to remember their target whilst writing. Some children are focusing on sentence structure, some are adding more detail to their writing and others need to remember to use finger spaces and form their letters correctly. You will be able to see their super writing and discuss their targets at parents evening next week.

Thank you to all the parents who accompanied us on our trip to Denso Nature Reserve. Please see our separate posts for photographs of our super visit. Click here to visit the website for the Nature Reserve or if you would like some more information.

Next Tuesday we are going to the theatre – remember we will be returning to school after 3.30pm. Next week we are creating leaf collages in the style of Andy Goldsworthy – so if you go for a walk in the woods over the weekend please can you collect lots of leaves.

Have a super weekend.

Rainbows, thunderstorms and tornadoes in Year 1!!

October 16, 2014 at 2:13 pm

The children all thought of some super questions in their learning logs and we have been trying to answer them during our weekly science lessons. “Why do we get rainbows?” “What is a tornado?” “Why is thunder loud?”

The children have thoroughly enjoyed being scientists. We have done lots of different experiments. What was your child’s favourite? Can they tell you about why and how thunderstorms happen? Or why we see rainbows?

Year 1 had fun in the woods!

October 15, 2014 at 3:05 pm

We all had a brilliant time at the Nature Reserve at Denso Marstons. Steve, the warden, was an excellent guide and knew lots of interesting things about trees. The children enjoyed collecting and sorting leaves. Steve was impressed by their knowledge as lots of children could name the leaves and trees they found. They also did some bark rubbings. The children had great fun looking for ‘Boggarts’ – ask your child to tell you what one is? Maybe you have one living in your garden!

Thank you very much to all the parents who came on the visits with us – we hope you enjoyed it too.

All About Shapes

October 14, 2014 at 11:39 am

This week we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. The children have enjoyed doing lots of practical activities including:
– finding shapes in catalogues
– making shapes with straws
– using geoboards
– creating shapes on an iPad app
– sorting shapes on Venn diagrams
– making robot pictures
Can your child find any 2D or 3D shapes at home? Can they talk about 2D shapes using the vocabulary ‘sides’ and ‘corners’ or 3D shapes using the words ‘vertices’, ‘edges’ and ‘faces’? Can you leave a comment to tell us about the shapes you find?

A tasty week in Year 1

October 10, 2014 at 2:34 pm

What a tasty week we have had! On Monday we followed instructions to make a delicious fruit smoothie and on Wednesday we made our vegetable soup using produce from our school farm. It was lovely to see so many of you there – did you enjoy your soup? On Thursday the children wrote their own set of instructions about how to make soup. They learnt about time words and bossy verbs such as first, next, put, stir, pour.

In maths we have had lots of fun learning our number bonds to 10. These are the numbers that pair up together to make 10 e.g. 9+1, 5 + 5, 6 + 4. The children used shaving foam blobs, locked padlocks with keys and went on a number bond trail around the classroom. Learning the number bonds is a key skill in Year 1 and each week we will have a number bond of the week. Number bond of the week this week is 5 + 5 = 10 and 10 – 5 = 5.

In our science lesson we focussed on why thunder and lightning happens. The children are loving being scientists and doing all our mini weather investigations. Ask them how they made thunder this week? We will be posting a weather blog when we have done all our investigations.

Thank you for all your support with learning logs, spellings and reading at home. We have seen some super work and the children have been very proud sharing their work with the class. Thank you also to everyone who has left a comment on our blog posts – the children love reading them.

Remember it is our trip to the nature reserve next Wednesday. Hopefully the weather will be dry but the children need sensible footwear or Wellington boots as they will be outside exploring the woods the whole time they are there. They will be having a school dinner before or after their trip.

Have a super weekend.

Number bond madness

October 7, 2014 at 11:33 am

Have a play on this number bond game.

Screen Shot 2014-10-09 at 14.44.31

Today we have been finding out about number bond families. Can your child tell you any pairs of numbers that make 10? Can they sing you the number bond song?

1 add 9,
1 add 9,
9 add 1,
9 add 1,
Bring them altogether,
Bring them altogether,
That makes 10, that makes 10!

2 add 8,
2 add 8,
8 add 2,
8 add 2,
Bring them altogether,
Bring them altogether,
That makes 10, that makes 10!

3 add 7,
3 add 7,
7 add 3,
7 add 3,
Bring them altogether,
Bring them altogether,
That makes 10, that makes 10!

4 add 6,
4 add 6,
6 add 4,
6 add 4,
Bring them altogether,
Bring them altogether,
That makes 10, that makes 10!

5 add 5,
5 add 5,
5 add 5,
5 add 5,
Bring them altogether,
Bring them altogether,
That makes 10, that makes 10!

Look at all the fun ways to learn number bonds – we even used shaving foam!

A smooth start to the week…

October 7, 2014 at 11:14 am

This week the children are learning about instructions. They have followed a recipe to make a delicious smoothie. Ask your child if they can tell you how to make a smoothie. Do they know what a bossy verb is?

A busy week in Year 1!

October 3, 2014 at 2:42 pm

In literacy we have read the book ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ written by Vivian French. We have been busy tasting lots of different vegetables. What was your child’s favourite? The children have been thinking of adjectives to describe the vegetables – we had crunchy carrots, slimy beetroot, scrumptious peas we even used some alliteration such as ruby red rhubarb. They then used these adjectives to write a class poem and their own individual version. They tried very hard and we had some great poems written. They have also been busy using different types of media to create pictures of the vegetables – they explored pastels, chalks, paints and pencils. The finished art work will be displayed in our classrooms.

In maths we have been focussing on subtraction. We have been creating our own calculations using autumn objects. The children had fun taking away conkers and acorns. The children recorded their findings in different ways – some wrote calculations and some drew pictures to work out the answers. Some children were extended using a number line to subtract.

We had a very exciting science lesson all about rainbows. The children were involved in different investigations all based on splitting white light into the seven colours of the rainbow. Ask your child how they found a rainbow.

We hope you are all looking forward to tasting our delicious vegetable soup next Wednesday. Please return your reply slips so we know how much to make!!

Have a great weekend.

The book ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ has inspired us!

October 2, 2014 at 11:51 am

We have tried lots of delicious vegetables just like Oliver did. Which vegetable did you like the best? We have also created some amazing pictures. Which is your favourite picture and why?
