As you may know the government requires Year 1 children to take a phonics test in June.
The class teacher sits with one child at a time and asks them to read real and nonsense words. You can help your child at home:
- When reading with your child, ask your child to look for digraphs and trigraphs in words (2 or 3 letters which together make one sound).
- Encourage children to sound words out and then blend these sounds together. Make sure children do not miss sounds out or add sounds in.
- Ask children to invent their own nonsense words.
- Write words on cards and sort them into real or nonsense piles.
- Play games on the computer to read real and nonsense words.
This is a good website:
Click on ‘free phonics play’
Click on phases 4/5
Choose a game: Buried Treasure, Picnic on Pluto, Obb and Bob or Dragons Den
Click phase 4/5 again
The images below show the phonemes and their alternative spellings e.g. ‘ai’ as in rain can also be a-e (make) ay (day) ei (eight). To enlarge the images click on them twice.
Alternatively, Mr Thorne’s phonics apps (iOS or Android) are a rich resource. They cost 99p each.
Please contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your support.

The children in 1GJ had a brilliant time at the museum. They had fun exploring all the different galleries – especially the old video games! They also learnt about the Cottingley Fairies and how special effects are used in movies. Thank you to Elsa’s Dad and Corday’s Mum who came with us – we hope you enjoyed it too.

This week the children have all been keen ‘historians’. They enjoyed learning about John Logie Baird and the invention of the television. They found out lots of interesting facts about him. Did you know he was Scottish and he was born in 1888. Can your child remember any other facts?
In maths we have been using counting sticks to count in 2s, 5s and 10s. They had fun counting pairs of socks, gloves and their hands and feet. They enjoyed investigating the different patterns. How far can your child count in these multiples? They have also been estimating and counting spots on wrapping paper. They had to estimate and then put a unit cube onto each spot and then count them. Some children were extended to swapping their 10 units for a ten.
We have continued our literacy work based on ‘The Queen’s Knickers’. The children used a story mountain to help them think about the different parts of the story. What happened in the beginning? What was the problem? What was the solution? How did the story end? They have also been writing sentences based on other characters stealing the knickers. They thought of some great adjectives to describe their characters. We had naughty dragons setting the knickers on fire and invisible ghosts floating through the castle to pinch the knickers!
We have started a new unit of work in Science all about materials. This week the children have been feeling lots of objects and deciding what it is made from. They then sorted the objects using different criteria such as is it hard? Is it made from wood?
Remember we are visiting the Media Museum next week. Your child will need to wear their school uniform and bring a packed lunch.
Have a lovely weekend.

We hope you have all had a lovely holiday. We have lots of exciting things planned for this half term. In history we will be learning about the invention of the television. Do you know who invented television and when they did it?
We will also be visiting the National Media Museum in Bradford. We will be finding out lots more about how televisions work and taking part in two workshops. Thank you to everyone who has already returned their permission slips. We need lots of parents and carers to accompany us on this visit. Please let us know if you would like to join us. We will also be learning about the Queen’s Coronation and we are going to have fun re enacting this celebration. More details will follow soon.
In literacy we will be doing a unit of work based on story writing. We will be using story mountains and creating our own simple stories. We will also be reading the story of Cinderella and basing some of our writing on this book. Remember you can bring different versions of this story to share with your class – please make sure that your name is written inside it. In our design and technology lessons we will be designing and creating a moving vehicle – we will be making Royal carriages and cars.
In science we are investigating and sorting materials. We will be using this information to help us create floating and flying knickers for the Queen!!
We will be doing lots of practical maths activities this half term including capacity and money. We will also be doing place value, subtraction and addition tasks. We will be practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and our number bonds to 10.
Phew! Another busy half term and we’ve not even mentioned all the exciting activities we have planned for Christmas!
We are looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow.
