1S have had some super scientists showing off over the last week. Thank you to all of the children who participated in our class S Factor and well done! The children performed independently and confidently and we were all very impressed. Our winner was decided by the whole class and he/she is…
…Mr Alfie Dawes – Well done! You will be performing your terminal velocity experiment in the school S factor final on Friday. Good luck!

Year 1 have been acting out the story of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’.
This is what some of the children learnt during the lesson:
“It might not work out properly the first time but if you keep practising it will get much better.” Stevie
“Keep on going if you do something wrong.” Tia
“It was hard to talk like an animal but I kept trying.” Huzaifah
“I used a deep voice to sound like a mean, slow troll.” Harry
“I used a quiet voice to sound scared.” Maya
Look at some of our performances.

Fee Fi Fo Fum!! What an exciting week in Year 1! The children got a letter from Jack and he had left them some magic beans to plant. The children were keen to plant the beans so we dashed up to the school farm and had a great time planting our beans and a variety of other seeds.
They are all growing in the year 1 corridor. What do you think will be at the top of our beanstalks? The children then read the story of Jack and the beanstalk and did some drama ‘hot seating’ the giant. They then created word banks to describe him using super adjectives. Some children were introduced to using a thesaurus to extend their vocabulary. They then drew their own giants and wrote wanted posters.
In maths we have been practising our addition skills using numicon, number lines and 100 squares. Some children have been taught how to partition and recombine to add bigger numbers such as 47 + 26 = ? Our number bond of the week is 16+4.
We also had fun collecting tadpoles from our school pond.
We now have a tank of tiny tadpoles in each class and we are ready to watch how they change. Very exciting!
Well done to everyone who entered the S factor auditions. We saw some super science experiments. The Year 1 winners will go through to the grand final on the 1st May.
1GJ had a great time at Rodley Nature Reserve – please see our separate post for photographs of this super day. Remember that 1S are going next week.
In PE we have been developing our ball skills – rolling, kicking and passing. Please make sure that your child has an indoor and outdoor PE kit in school and that everything is clearly labelled.
We have also resourced our outside area with some lovely new games and items. Perfect timing for summer sun fun.
Have a great weekend. The Year 1 Team.
P.S. We still need lots of cereal boxes, tubs, card etc. for our exciting DT topic. Please bring them into Year One ASAP. Thank you.

1GJ have had a brilliant day at Rodley Nature Reserve – what a fantastic resource so close to our school! We have had fun pond dipping, bird watching, collecting leaves, feathers and flowers for our sticky boards and learning about bee keeping. What can your child remember? What was their favourite part? Thank you to the parents who came with us.

We have another busy and exciting half term ahead. We have planned lots of super activities, trips and visitors.
In literacy we are focussing on Traditional Stories including Jack and the beanstalk and the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We will be looking carefully at the characters and using lots of adjectives to describe them. We will also be writing our own versions of traditional stories. Our Design and Technology this half term will be linked to literacy and we will be designing and creating bridges for the Billy Goats to use. We will continue with our guided reading and phonic sessions and will be revising all the phonemes in preparation for the phonic screening in June.
In maths we are beginning by practising our addition skills using numicon and number lines. Some children will be extended and taught how to use partitioning and recombining to solve addition calculations using larger numbers e.g 37 + 26= ? We will then move onto subtraction, multiplication and division.
In science we are beginning by learning about seeds, plants and life cycles. We will be visiting the school farm to plant lots of seeds. Look out for them growing in the Year 1 corridor. We will also be learning about animals – types, habitats and life cycles. Our trips to Rodley Nature Reserve, Tropical World and the ‘Animals in Tuition’ workshop will support our science work this half term. Don’t forget the ‘S Factor’ auditions will be held on Friday 24th April and the grand final is the 1st May.
In Religious Education we are learning about Creation Stories and in PE we are focussing on games skills and developing our kicking, passing and rolling using a variety of equipment. In ICT we are learning about coding and algorithms.
Phew! Another exciting half term in Year 1! We are looking forward to seeing you all on Monday.

We have been busy getting the classroom ready for the new term. Paws and Claws pet shop is fully stocked and open for business – we just need customers! We are looking forward to seeing your photographs of you with your pets. The Easter gardens have grown and look amazing. We also have a tank ready for some frog spawn. With a trip to Rodley Nature Reserve during our first week and lots of exciting activities planned it’s going to be another great half term in Year 1.
We are looking forward to seeing you all next week.

Well we have only been in school for 4 days….but what a busy 4 days!!
On Monday we walked to St Johns church to learn about the Easter celebration. The children listened to the Easter story and then worked in small groups to create Easter gardens. They also went on a photograph hunt around the church to find and learn about different artefacts. Thank you to Paul Tudge and all the parents who supported us on this visit. (Please see our separate blog post). We also had fun making our chocolate Easter nests…yum!
Tuesday was our brilliant ‘Spring Chicken’ event. We hope you enjoyed looking at your child’s book, watching their movies and eating the Easter nests!! Thank you to our friends and family who came to visit.
Here are the links to our amazing videos so you can show them off over and over again. Enjoy!

In maths we have had a very practical week doing lots of measuring, weighing and capacity work. They have been learning about centimetres, metres, millilitres, litres, grams and kilograms. Can they practise their measuring at home? They could weigh baking ingredients, fill bottles at bath time or measure objects around the house. The children had fun decorating their metre snakes and using them to find things that were longer and shorter than 1 metre. Can they use it at home to measure objects?
Thank you for all your support with reading, blogging, spellings and their super learning logs.
Remember the Science ‘S Factor’ auditions are taking place on Friday the 24th of April. Please click on this link for more information. http://ffyr3.primaryblogger.co.uk/science/the-s-factor-farsley-farfield-science-competition/ Have fun!
