Captain Conjunction and another great week in Year 1!
Friday 13th November | 2 comments
In literacy we have enjoyed reading ‘The Queens Knickers’ by Nicholas Allen. This is a fun story where the Queen loses her pants!!
The children have been writing descriptions of the Queen’s bedroom and thinking about what makes a good sentence. They have tried hard to remember to use finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. Later in the week they met ‘Captain Conjunction’ and have learnt what a conjunction is and how to use them in their writing.
Click here for a game to help learn more about conjunctions.
The children looked at pictures of various castles and then had to extend a sentence using a conjunction such as and, so, but and because. They wrote some great sentences including ‘The castle has a strong door so the baddies can’t get in’ and ‘The castle has a small door because fairies live inside’. In handwriting we have been practising forming letters from the long ladder family – l, i, t, u, j and y.
In maths we have been busy doing lots of addition calculations. The children chose 2 number cards and added them together using a number line or numicon.
They then put the numbers the other way round and learnt that numbers can be added in any order e.g 6 + 5 = 11 and 5 + 6 = 11. They then moved onto solving worded problems such as ‘The Queen has 5 jewels on her crown. She adds 3 more. How many altogether?’ The children drew pictures to help them answer each problem. Click here for some fun addition games.
Number bond of the week is 10+0 = 10.
In science we continued our work about sorting materials. The children sorted objects according to their properties such as metal, plastic, wooden, hard, transparent. They had to think carefully where to put an object that had more than one property e.g hard and metal.
The fantastic five challenges this week were
1. Printing a repeating pattern on a pair of knickers
2. Building a palace in the construction area
3. Addition challenges
4. Designing a pair of knickers
5. Drawing or painting a palace scene
Thank you to everyone who has returned their consent slip for our visit to Abbey House Museum. We will confirm which parent helpers we need soon.
We have had a good day collecting money for ‘Children in Need’ and we have thought carefully about how our money will help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Thank you for your donations.
Have a great weekend.
