Look what is happening in Year 1!

Welcome back Year 1

Sunday 3rd January | 2 comments

Happy new year! We hope you have all had a lovely Christmas holiday. We have lots of exciting lessons and activities planned for the next half term. Our topic is ‘What happens in an art gallery?’ and we will be learning all about different types of art and creating our own artwork using various skills and techniques. We even have a real artist coming into school to teach us how to create fused glass. We also have our trip to Cartwright Hall Art Gallery on the 13th and 14th January. Please can you return your child’s consent form during the first week back. You will have an opportunity to look at all the amazing work we create at our own art gallery on Friday 12th February from 2.30pm in the school hall. More details will be sent home soon.

In literacy we are beginning by having a winter themed week and will be reading and writing our own winter poems. We then move onto a unit of work about dinosaurs and fantasy settings and the children will be creating their own characters and settings and writing stories. We will be making simple movies and recording them on the iPads. We will also begin teaching cursive handwriting – the children are very excited about this. We will continue with our daily phonic sessions and guided reading.

In maths we will be learning about place value and looking at hundreds, tens and units. We will be solving missing number problems using our addition and subtraction knowledge, having fun with time and money and revisiting 2D and 3D shapes.

In PHSCE our assemblies and circle times will be based on  ‘Going for Goals’ and ‘Growth Mindsets’.

In science we will be developing our working scientifically skills and doing various investigations including experimenting with ice and using materials to keep a dinosaur dry!

Our PPA time will now be on a Wednesday and, this term, it will be covered by Miss Routledge. In 1S she will be teaching RE, Music and ICT and in 1GJ she will be teaching RE and music.

Phew! What a busy and exciting half term.

We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 5th January.

Happy new year to you all….. Hope you all had a lovely break….. Ashwin is all ready for the new term and to learn lots of exciting things. He is looking forward to the trip and learning about art.

  2. Kirsty (Charlie's mum) says:

Happy New Year to year 1! It looks like you have lots of exciting learning ahead. Charlie told us all about the ice experiment and what he thought would happen. He remembered onomatopoeia was ‘words that created pictures in your head’ so we had another look on the computer to remind ourselves! Charlie has had great fun playing on the number games and has worked really hard on education city. Enjoy the trips to the Cartwright Hall!
