A VERY busy week!

We’ve had another exciting week in Year 1 – but we have still managed to do lots of work! In maths we’ve been developing our multiplication skills.
We used numicon to help us practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Can your child tell you what 2 lots of ten is or what is 5×2=? We then used this knowledge to help us solve some pirate multiplication problems, for example “How many hands do 9 pirates have?” Click here for some games we have used in class.
Thank you to everyone who answered a pirate problem on our blog. The children were very excited every time a new message appeared! Feel free to keep commenting over the weekend.
In literacy we wrote a recount about Pirate Day. The children remembered everything they’ve been taught this year and did some super writing. You will be able to look at all their great work at our sharing session in a few weeks time – more details will be sent home soon about this. The children also read a story that Brilliant Bertha had written but unfortunately she had made quite a few mistakes! The children edited her story and improved it by adding punctuation, adjectives and conjunctions. In our handwriting lesson we learnt how to join ff, ll and ss cursively. We have been practising reading and writing high frequency words and learning about compound words in our phonic lessons.
We have continued to use ‘Purple Mash’ on the laptops and looked at coding and map programmes. Has your child shown you this ICT programme at home?
We have been looking at aerial maps in our geography lessons. In their hive groups the children worked together to label an aerial photograph of our school and it’s grounds. Then they went on a treasure hunt to find some clues around school and used an aerial photograph to help. 1GJ did this activity last week.
1S have also got some new ‘pets’. They have kindly been given to us by Amelie’s Mum and we are going to watch these sticky creatures grow over the next 3 weeks. We are hoping they will all grow to about 10 cm. Can your child tell you more about our new visitors?
Have a lovely weekend.
