A whistle stop tour of the UK…

Friday 22nd July | 2 comments

Phew! This week we have been on a whistle stop tour around the British Isles. The children have enjoyed learning lots of facts about each country. Can they show you on a map where England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are? Can they remember the capital cities and describe the flags?

On Monday we visited England. We went for on open top bus tour of London and learnt about many of the main landmarks including the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. We then enjoyed a game of cricket and finished our day with afternoon tea, we all tucked in to cucumber sandwiches, scones and a refreshing cup of tea!

On Tuesday we travelled to Wales and learnt lots of interesting facts. Did you know that Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales and that the daffodil is the national flower? We also played tag rugby and matched up lots of pictures to Welsh facts.

On Thursday we visited Scotland. We played Scottish fact bingo and learnt lots of new things. Can your child tell you anything about this country? We sampled some shortbread as we listened to some bagpipes. We enjoyed learning about the Loch Ness Monster and having a go at a Highland fling. We even got to look at a real kilt!

Our last country we visited on Friday was Northern Ireland. The children listened to some folk stories about how the Giants Causeway was created and looked at some photographs of various landmarks. We then had fun trying to do some Irish dancing.

Each day the children have been writing non chronological reports about the countries they have visited. They have remembered lots of facts and produced some great pieces of writing.

We even managed to fit in some maths! The children revised the properties of 3D and 2D shapes and we tested their knowledge with some shape quizzes. Can your child remember how many faces a cube has? Can they remember how many edges a cylinder has and how many sides a circle has? Can your child remember what an irregular pentagon looks like? Click here for some more fun quizzes and learning.

Thank you to those family members that came into our sharing session. We hope that you enjoyed it – the children are very proud of ALL the work they have done this year and so are all of the staff. Well done!

We hope you liked the class photos. Very special!

Have a great weekend,

The Year One Team

Learning about the UK was really fun. Can’t wait to see the Loch Ness monster. Year 1 has been GREAT!!

Erin has loved her tour of the UK and has told us lots of facts about all the countries. She loved the cricket and the rugby, and her tea and scones! She wondered whether we could go hunting for ‘Nessy’ and whether we should try and climb Snowden in the summer holiday!
