Farsley Farfield Year 1 Blog

Look what is happening in Year 1!

More farming, beanstalks, plurals and place value!

April 28, 2017 at 11:59 am

This week it was the turn of 1S to go to the school farm. The children were very excited to receive a letter from Jack asking them for help to plant his magic beans. They had lots of fun on the school farm, working with the older children, planting the beans. Will they grow? What might be at the top of them?

These photographs show that we had a great afternoon on the school farm. We dug out the weeds, fed the chickens, planted seeds, watered plants, raked soil and even harvested. How lucky are Farsley Farfield children!?

In literacy this week we have been focusing on plurals. The children did various tasks and have been looking at the spelling patterns. They matched singular and plural words and sorted them according to their endings s/es/ies. The children then thought back to the story Jack and the Beanstalk and they had to draw an alternative baddy and setting that could be at the top of a beanstalk. They then wrote an alternative middle and ending to the story. There were some super ideas shared, well done Year One! We then discussed individual targets with the children to help them improve their writing. We have revised a-e/ai/ay/ea/e-e/ey and ee in phonics.

In maths we have continued our work on place value. We partitioned numbers into tens and ones, we ordered numbers and really thought about, discussed and practically looked at what numbers are made up of and how they can be represented.

In Science we thought carefully about the life cycle of a bean. Can your child tell you more?

We were also lucky enough to have some very special visitors that had just hatched out of nursery on Monday morning…very cute!

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend – see you all on Tuesday and remember 1GJ have their school trip to Rodley Nature Reserve then. 1s are going on Thursday.

If you have any cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, yogurt cups etc please bring into Year 1 – we have something very exciting to build soon! Thank you.

A busy first week back…

April 21, 2017 at 12:37 pm

What a busy and fun first week (4 days!) back we have had. The children have had a lot of fun exploring our new role play areas. Thank you to everyone who has sent in or emailed photographs of the children with their pets.

The children were very excited to receive a letter from Jack asking them for help to plant his magic beans. 1GJ had lots of fun on the school farm, working with the older children, planting the beans. Will they grow? What might be at the top of them?  1S will be on the farm and planting their seeds on Monday.

These photographs show that we had a great afternoon on the school farm. We dug out the weeds, fed the chickens, planted seeds, watered plants, raked soil and even harvested. How lucky are Farsley Farfield children!?

In literacy we’ve been reading different versions of Jack and the beanstalk. We then created word banks to describe the giant and some children used a thesaurus to find more interesting adjectives. We then moved onto creating ‘Wanted’ posters to help us find the giant. The children used some great words to describe this huge brute such as greedy, enormous, bossy and demanding. We have also been looking at how to use ?! and . correctly in our grammar lessons. Can your child tell you or write down a question sentence?

In maths we have looked at place value and counting. We have challenged ourselves to count to 200 and used a 200 square to help us. We have counted forwards and backwards and looked for patterns within these numbers to help us.

We also have some new visitors to our classroom. We went to our school pond and collected some tadpoles. Hopefully, they will turn into froglets and then frogs. Then they can join the other frogs in our pond at the end of the summer term just as the Year One children will be getting ready to join Year Two!

In our science lessons the children have used magnifying glasses to look carefully at plants and labelled parts of them.

The children have really enjoyed being phonic detectives this week. We have revised ck, ff, ll, ng, ss, zz, ch, ph, qu, sh, th, wh and ar. Maybe they could continue being detectives at home and spot more clues in their reading books. Enjoy!

Have a lovely weekend.

The Year One Team.

Welcome back Year 1

April 13, 2017 at 1:16 pm

We have another busy and exciting half term ahead. We have planned lots of super activities, trips and visitors. We have been busy getting our classrooms ready…

In Literacy we are focussing on Traditional Stories, including Jack and the Beanstalk and the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We will be looking carefully at the characters and using lots of adjectives to describe them. We will also be writing our own versions of traditional stories. Our Design and Technology lessons are linked to Literacy and we will be designing and creating bridges for the Billy Goats to use. We will continue with our guided reading and phonic sessions and will be revising all the phonemes in preparation for the phonic screening in June. In our grammar lessons we will be learning about prefixes, suffixes and plurals.

In Maths we are continuing to learn about place value. We will also be revisiting addition and subtraction and solving missing number calculations and learning how to double numbers.

In Science we are beginning by learning about seeds, plants and life cycles. We will be visiting the school farm to plant lots of seeds. Look out for them growing in the Year 1 corridor. We will also be learning about animals – types, habitats and life cycles. Our trip to Rodley Nature Reserve and the ‘Animals in Tuition’ workshop will support our science work this half term. Please can you make sure that your child has a pair of Wellington boots in school as we will be visiting the farm during the first week and the grounds are still muddy. We also have a tank ready for some visitors in 1GJ. What do you think we might put in it?

Phew! Another exciting half term in Year 1! We are looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.
