3 Billy Goats Gruff, a troll, a bear, a penguin, a dragon, a witch and a gingerbread man all in Year One this week…

We have had a very fun and busy week. In Literacy we received this letter …
This then led us on an adventure where we followed a trail of flour, sugar and crumbs to try and discover what had happened to this little gingerbread man. The children had a great experience and met some very interesting characters along the way. Can your children remember who they met?
They finally met a witch and she seemed to know what had happened to the gingerbread man. It was all very exciting. The children then wrote a super letter back to the little old woman with a detailed explanation about the trail they had explored and what they thought had really happened to the gingerbread man. Can your child remember what they thought had happened to him? The little old lady was so pleased with the letters the children wrote that she made them all a gingerbread man to eat….yum!
During our grammar lessons we learnt about the suffixes -ing, -ed, -er and -est and how they change the meaning of words. We did an interesting sorting activity to build new words and had a think about some spelling rules.
In maths we have been working on our addition and subtraction skills. We used bar models to help us solve number sentences and whole/part models to help us solve missing number problems. Most children are now confident with addition but some children do need further practise with subtraction. Could they try some more at home?
Jack must have told the 3 Billy Goats Gruff how helpful we were planting his beans as we got a letter from them asking for help. The pesky troll kept breaking all the bridges and they couldn’t cross the river. After much excitement and discussion the children decided they would help and create their own bridges. The children built some amazing constructions using a variety of materials. The goats will be happy that we helped them cross the river safely. The children have done some great bridge research in their leaning logs too. Well done!
Remember you are all invited to our alien phonic workshop next Friday morning from 9am until 10am. We look forward to seeing you there.
Have a super weekend.
The Year 1 team.
