Vegetable fun in Year 1!
Friday 22nd September | 1 comment
In literacy we read the story Oliver’s Vegetables. Click here for an online version. We used this book to help us write our own simple vegetable poems.
We began by tasting lots of vegetables and then used adjectives to describe them. Can your child remember what an adjective is? The children then wrote sentences about which vegetables they liked and didn’t liked! Then in our next lesson they wrote their own simple poem – On Monday I had peas. On Tuesday I had carrots etc… Some children were extended and used adjectives in their writing and they thought of some great describing words such as crunchy cabbage, sloppy spinach and sour, sticky rhubarb.
In phonics we have revised th, ng, ai, ee , igh. Please keep practising the phonemes and words stuck in their reading records. In our key skill lessons we practised forming the letters o, g and q and the digits 3, 4 and 5 correctly. We have also learnt how to read and write the following common exception words – I, my, do, to, is, no, go, me, of. Your child needs to practise these words in their red spelling book which they brought home today.
In maths we have continued with our work on place value. This week the children have been using vocabulary such as more than, fewer, greater than, less than, equal to, odd, even. They sorted numbers, numicon, ten frames and number names using these words.
We have been plant detectives in our science lessons and visited our school farm. We picked a variety of fruit and vegetables and discussed how they grow. We also used the tweezers and magnifying glasses to look very carefully inside them to see if they had seeds. Can your child remember the main difference between fruit and vegetables?
We have also looked at pieces of art by Cezanne. The children then used different media to create their own pictures of vegetables. These will be on display in our classrooms.
On a Tuesday afternoon the children will either have a PSHE or Computing lesson. This week 1B learnt how to log on to a laptop and 1GJ discussed playground games and having fun with their friends.
Thank you for all your lovely comments on the Year 1 blog – the children really enjoy reading them. Remember you can click on the ‘thumbs up’ symbol if you have enjoyed reading this post.
Remember we are making soup on Monday 25th September – everyone is welcome to come and enjoy it from 2.45pm in the dining hall.
Have a super weekend.
