We have been reading the story ‘The Queen’s Knickers’ by Nicholas Allan. This is a fun story where the queen loses her pants!!
The children enjoyed creating their own pair of pants and using adjectives to describe them. They designed spooky Halloween pants, Christmas pants, Eid pants and even bonfire night pants! Then they wrote sentences about their knickers. In phonics we have learnt wh, ph, oe and ew. In handwriting we have practised forming the capital letters A,B,C,D,E and F correctly.
In maths we have been focusing on place value. In our first session the children used ten frames and numicon to work out how many tens and ones each number had. In our second session we used dienes equipment – tens and ones. The children enjoyed using them for different tasks and many of them can now represent a two digit number with tens and ones. Please can you help your child practise writing the digits to 20. Many children are still mixing up the digits e.g. writing 31 instead of 13, 51 instead of 15. Number bond family of the week is 10 + 0 = 10, 0 + 10 = 10, 10 – 0 = 10.
In our science lesson we continued our work on materials. The children used their knowledge of materials to help the queen make something that would keep her knickers dry. They had great fun testing their designs!
In history we have been looking at Victorian artefacts and created our own class museums. They were all very interested in the finger stocks and the back straightener that was used by Victorian teachers. Some children wrote labels and helped position the artefacts in the museum and others used an Ipad to take photographs of the objects and label them.
A group of boys in 1B have been particularly busy in the construction area this week. Take a look at this fantastic cinema that they built!
Thank you for all your contributions for Children in Need. The children looked fantastic today and have really enjoyed guessing the number of sweets and putting their coins on Pudsey bear.
It was lovely to see many of you at parents evening last week. We hope you have found the packs we sent home helpful.
Have a lovely weekend.

Phew! What a busy week – a trip, a visit from an author, parents evenings and plenty of great learning too.
We began our history topic by learning about Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. The children learnt lots of facts about them both and enjoyed looking at the Victorian artefacts. We then continued this work during our trip to Abbey House where the children had a great time. They all took part in a ‘Comparing Queens’ workshop where they learnt lots of interesting things and also had fun exploring the museum. Thank you very much to all the parents who supported us on our trips.

In maths we have focussed on 3D shape. The children enjoyed some fun practical tasks including building towers and making their own shapes with straws and plasticine. In Year 1 the children need to be able to name and talk about pyramids, cuboids, spheres, cubes and cylinders. Can your child remember how many faces they have? How many vertices they have? Number bond family of the week is 9 + 1 = 10, 1 + 9 = 10, 10 – 9 = 1 and 10 – 1 = 9.
In literacy the children have all written a recount of their trip to Abbey House. Olivia Opener made another visit and reminded the children about using good time connectives such as first, next, after that and finally. In phonics we have learnt the phonemes oy, ir and ue and in handwriting we practised forming v, w , x and z.
In our PHSE lesson the children met Pantosaurus. He is a friendly dinosaur who talked to them about being safe. This is linked to the NSPCC project ‘Pants are Private’. The children all loved this song!
Well done to Alfie and Arthur who were the first children in Year 1 to achieve their 30:30 certificate for completing 10 days of being active for 30 minutes both at school and at home. Keep being active everyone and remember to bring your chart to school once you’ve filled 10 days.
Have a great weekend.

In our literacy lessons we have read the story ‘The Princess and the Pea’. We also had fun acting it out – the bed definitely wasn’t comfy! We discussed the parts of a story – beginning, middle and end. The children then retold the story and all tried hard to remember to use finger spaces, full stops and capital letters. In phonics we learnt the phonemes ay, ou, ie and ea. We practised forming h, b, k and p cursively in our handwriting lesson.
We have had lots of practical fun in our maths lessons. We have been focussing on 2D shape. In Year 1 the children need to be confident recognising and describing circles, squares, rectangles and triangles. They need to know how many sides and corners each shape has. Some children were extended with some problem solving and reasoning tasks such as “What shapes can you make using 6 lollipop sticks?” and “What is the same/different about a square and a rectangle?” We also had fun creating 2D shape robots.
In science we have started our topic about materials. First the children sorted objects according to their properties such as metal, plastic, wooden, hard, transparent. They had to think carefully where to put an object that had more than one property e.g hard and metal. Next the children worked in their hive groups to create collages using materials such as card, foil, bubble wrap, plastic and wood. They then described their collage using vocabulary such as hard, bendy, bumpy, rough. The children also had fun using various magnets to investigate and sort which materials were magnetic. The final activity was to make a pair of sunglasses. Which materials were best for the job? The children had to make sure they used a transparent material.
In PE we had fun practising our balancing and travelling on the apparatus.
Remember we are going to Abbey House next week. 1B are going on Wednesday 8th and 1GJ on Thursday 9th. The children need to wear their school uniform and bring a packed lunch.
We are looking forward to seeing you all at Parents Evening next week.
Have a lovely weekend.
