In our RE lessons this half term we have been learning about celebrations and special occasions including Diwali, weddings, birthdays, Eid, Holi and Christmas. The children enjoyed looking at and discussing each other’s photographs, from home, of them celebrating with their families. We then looked more closely at the Muslim celebration of Eid. We finished this unit of work with our trip to St John’s church – where they learnt about the Christian christingle celebration. Reverend Hannah also explained about the advent candle and some children helped her light it. Thank you very much to all the parents and grandparents who supported us on our visit.

We all had a great time on our trips to Thwaites Mill. The children learnt about how the Victorians celebrated Christmas – they all made a traditional cracker and card. They also had fun playing with Victorian toys, making delicious lemonade and having a turn at making a rag rug. Thank you again to all the parents who supported us on our trips.

In maths we have been consolidating lots of the things we have learnt so far this year. The children had fun completing a tricky dot to dot and filling in missing numbers on strings of fairy lights. We have also been developing our fluency when adding 2 numbers together. The children are now adding with more confidence using their mental maths skills, number lines and counters. Keep practising those number bonds!

Our literacy lessons have been linked to RE this week and the children have begun to write a mini book about the Christmas story. In our phonics lessons we have been revising all the phonemes they have learnt this term. We are also busy hearing all the children read individually and many of them have moved onto the next level – well done. We will update their book allocation on ‘Bug Club’ ready for the holidays.

We are looking forward to seeing you all next week at our Christmas performances. Keep practising all the songs at home. Our performances are in the junior, south hall, on Tuesday at 2pm and Wednesday at 9.30am.

Have a super weekend.

I attended both trips and the children were a credit to the school. Both were lovely trips.

Sophia loved the trips and really enjoyed making and drinking the lemonade! As I couldn’t attend she told me all about her trips and how Mr Durkin used to have roast bunny soup

Ayah enjoyed both trips. She has been telling us about how she made lemonade.
