Look what is happening in Year 1!

Amazing bodies, place value and measuring fun!

February 23, 2018 at 12:58 pm

We began our new topic with a ‘Busy Body Day’ and the children had fun investigating and learning interesting facts about their body. The children began by drawing things that were in their body. We then looked in information books and correctly put the body parts in the right places. The children were interested in finding out body facts! Did you know your eyes see upside down and that you are taller in a morning? They labelled a body and wrote sentences about some of the facts they had learnt. They also enjoyed looking at the model of the skeleton and created their own using chalk, paint and art straws.

Everyone was very excited with our new resource the virtual T shirt. We’ve had lots of fun using the app ‘Virtuali – tee’ to look inside a human body!!

The children have been busy exploring the new role play areas and investigating our senses displays.

We also had lots of fun at our ‘Body Olympics’. The children took part in the long jump, straw javelin and measuring different body parts. The highlight of this event was the Curly Wurly challenge! The children worked as a team to stretch the chocolate bar – the longest was 68cm!

In maths we have done lots of practical work based on place value. We began by making numbers using tens frames and then moved onto using base 10, numicon and straws to represent different two digit numbers.

Our PHSE unit this half term is ‘What is safe for our bodies?’ This week we have been talking about what is safe to go inside our bodies. The children had to sort our weekly shop into safe, sometimes safe and never safe. This led to some very interesting discussions and the children were very aware of how to keep themselves safe.

The children have enjoyed their first week of ‘Phonic Detectives’. They are all very keen to be detective of the day and win the prize! Thank you for your support at home completing the phonic spotting sheet.

Have a super weekend.

Welcome back Year 1!

February 17, 2018 at 8:05 am

We have another busy and exciting half term planned in Year 1. We will be learning lots about our amazing bodies and exploring our five senses. Look at our new role play areas:

On Monday we are having a ‘Busy Body Day’. We will begin by labelling the human body and finding out and writing lots of interesting body facts.

In our literacy lessons we will be writing poetry about our senses and we will also become chicken experts and write our own non-fiction book. We will also continue with our daily phonic lessons, guided reading and practising our joined up cursive writing.

In our science lessons we will be doing lots of practical investigations based on the body, senses and chickens! We will be visiting the farm so please make sure that your child has a pair of named wellington boots in school.

In maths we will be doing lots of work about place value and also having fun with lots of practical measuring.

In our PE lessons we are continuing our unit based on dance. During our Friday afternoon rotation the children will be doing RE, food skills, music and visiting the chickens on the farm.

We hope your child’s amazing art is on display in your homes. Thank you for all your kind donations – we raised over £150.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Monday.

A busy last week of the half term in Year 1!

February 9, 2018 at 2:32 pm

The highlight of our week was our amazing art gallery when the children exhibited their fabulous art work to the public. The children were very proud of their achievements and enjoyed sharing their work with their friends and family. Thank you to everyone who attended the gallery and for all your kind donations – we raised £148.67. This money will pay for some of the art resources and the rest will be put towards our animal workshop in the summer term.

In literacy we have continued with our story writing. This week we used the art work of Raphael Perez to inspire us.

The children used their imagination and fell into a painting again! They planned a problem and resolution and then wrote their own stories. This morning all the children did an independent piece of writing about the art work they’ve done this half term. This will help us update our writing assessments and set their targets ready for next half term. We have heard all the children read individually and updated their book allocation on ‘Bug Club’ ready for the holiday.

In maths the children have been using bar models to generate number bond families. They have also been using the symbols > is greater than, < is less than and = is equal to. They had to solve two calculations and help Bob Crocodile bite the biggest calculation.

We have had fun with shapes and art this week. The children were inspired by the art work of Gary Webb and Wassily Kandinsky and created 2D art work and 3D sculptures.

Have a lovely half term holiday.

Katie’s Picture Show, bar models and algorithms!

February 2, 2018 at 1:00 pm

In literacy this week we have read the story ‘Katie’s Picture Show’. In this book Katie explores an art gallery and touches the paintings and falls into them and has lots of amazing adventures. We used this story to help us write our own exciting stories. We looked at a piece of art called ‘Winter’ by Zuzana Chalupova and planned and wrote a story with a problem and resolution. The children all tried hard and wrote some super stories.

In maths we have been using bar models to subtract and find the difference. The children have enjoyed playing this fun subtraction game.

We have been learning about algorithms in our computing lesson this week. The children rotated around three tasks. The first activity was to order a set of instructions for making toast and then follow them. They all enjoyed the end product! Then they used a coding app on the ipads called ‘Daisy Dinosaur’ and finally they learnt how to program the bee-bots.

Our PHSE unit this half term is all about being unique and knowing that we are all different. This week we read the story ‘Elmer’ and in our circle time we talked about what makes us unique.

Remember you are all welcome at our art gallery on Thursday 8th of February at 2.30pm. We have lots of amazing art to show off!

Have a super weekend.
