Warning: Naughty Seagulls About!

June 29, 2018 at 1:34 pm

Year 1 have gone seagull crazy this week! When we read ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ lots of the children picked the seagulls as their favourite characters and so this week we have done lots of seagull based tasks!

We have ordered and followed instructions, thinking about the features of instructions and ensuring that other people could use them to make their very own seagulls. To check that we had ordered the steps of the instructions correctly we followed them and made our own flocks of seagulls. You may have spotted them flying around the corridor? We have also painted and used the laptops to create some beautiful lighthouse and seagull pictures.

Following all this seagull work we decided that the pesky trio of seagulls needed catching. We made wanted posters and used lots of adjectives to write descriptions of the characters.

In phonics this week we have continued to practise reading and writing the Year 1 tricky words. In our guided reading lessons we have focused on our comprehension skills and the children are now discussing what they have read in more detail.

In maths this week we have been working on time. We started the week practising using language to describe time such as first, then, next, before and after. We then decided that we needed to be able to describe time more specifically so made sure that we knew our months of the year and days of the week before we moved onto using clocks to tell the time.

Experiment of the week in 1GJ is investigating absorption and 1B are exploring circuits. We have also had some balloon fun and investigated if we could shoot it down a piece of string! Did it go faster if we changed the height of the string or the type of string?

The children have had lots of fun playing in the sun in our outdoor area this week. The glorious weather has been a real treat! Please remember to send hats and water bottles to school and to apply sun cream in the mornings. Children may bring sun cream to school to reapply later in the day and will have help if required.

Have a great weekend in the sun. We hope to see lots of you at the camp over on Saturday.

Money Money Money!

June 22, 2018 at 5:44 pm

This week the children have become money experts! Money can be a particularly difficult topic for Year 1 however the children have been amazing. We have played lots of fun games to help us remember the value of each coin. We used wax crayons to create coin rubbings, we used pictures of money to make our very own money characters and we calculated totals as we pretended to be shop keepers. Now that we have had plenty of practise the children can recognise coins, put them in order of value and can give example combinations of coins that have equivalent values to others. Next time you go shopping you can relax as the children will be able to do all the maths for you!

During literacy we have really enjoyed reading ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’ by Ronda and David Armitage.

On Monday we read the beginning of the story and then rewrote it in our very own mini books. The children considered the vocabulary used by the authors and gave the story their own twists with some fantastic adjectives and adverbs! Later in the week we discussed the problem faced by the characters. Can your child remember which sneaky character was stealing The Lighthouse Keeper’s lunch? We enjoyed guessing how the problem would be solved and finished our books by retelling the middle and the end of the story.

In phonics this week we have been practising some key words that are often a bit too tricky to sound out – such as come, some, was, saw. We have worked on spelling the days of the week, the months of the year and number names.

Science experiment of the week in 1GJ is to explore circuits. Can you make the lighthouse bulb light up? Can you make the buzzer work to warn the ships?

In 1B science we have been investigating which materials absorb water. We use pipettes to carefully drop water onto fabrics and then watch carefully to see what happens.

We have also been trying out a balloon powered helicopter and had lots of fun watching it fly!

Next week in maths we will be making sure we can order the days of the week and months of the year as well as working on our time telling skills. Does your child know what the hands on a clock show? In literacy we will be using our bossy verbs to write instructions and getting creative making our own greedy seagulls.

Enjoy the sunshine and football this weekend!

Buckets, place value, maps and phonic success in Year 1!

June 15, 2018 at 11:18 am

In literacy we have been reading the story ‘Billy’s Bucket’. The children had fun creating their own fantasy setting that was at the bottom of their bucket. They thought of some amazing places including fairgrounds, planets, magical castles and tropical islands. They then used adjectives to describe their setting. Finally, we moved onto planning a story using a story mountain.

Thank you for all your support with phonics. All the children have completed the screening and they all tried their best. We are very proud of them all – well done Year 1!

We have had more fun with place value in maths. The children are now confident using tens and ones and talking about place value with more confidence.

In geography we have learnt about the British Isles. The children have enjoyed learning facts about each country. Can they show you on a map where England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are? Can they remember the capital cities and describe the flags? All of Year 1 have picked a football team ready for the world cup – they have tried to find their country on a map. Some of them were quite tricky!

In our science lesson we had fun creating and testing our own parachutes. The children learnt about gravity pulling the parachute down and how the air gets trapped underneath it and slows it down.

Have a lovely weekend and happy Eid to all our families who are celebrating this weekend.

Poems, place value and lots of maps!

June 8, 2018 at 11:49 am

We have had a busy first week back. In literacy we have been busy reading and performing summer and seaside poems. We began by reading lots of poems in our hive groups and then chose one to practise and perform to the rest of the class. This was good fun and some children really enjoyed performing! We then moved onto writing our own group poems about summer. The children thought of some great ideas. In phonics we have revised all the phonemes in preparation for the screening next week – enjoy playing the new dice game over the weekend.

We have revisited place value in our maths lessons and been exploring numbers up to 200! The children have played games and used Base 10 equipment and part whole models to make 2 digit numbers and understand their value. The children enjoyed playing ‘Kahoot’ on the iPads and laptops. This is a quick fire game – this week they had to put numbers in the correct order.

We have started our geography topic ‘Wonderful World’ and began by discussing what geography is and used globes, maps, Google Earth and atlases to help us. The children discussed and sorted human features e.g. shops, harbours and physical features e.g. cliffs, beach. We have also been looking at aerial maps. We used an aerial map to explore our school and grounds and find eight red crosses – there was some super team work and great map reading. Then in their hive groups the children worked together to label an aerial photograph of our school and its grounds.

The children are enjoying our ‘Science Laboratories’. Experiment of the week in 1GJ is investigating ramps and in 1B the children are exploring floating and sinking.

All the children enjoyed some ‘wow’ science where we had fun putting mentos in diet coke! Can they remember why it exploded?

We having our class photographs taken on Wednesday – so brush your hair and wash your face!!

Have a lovely weekend,

Welcome back to the final half term in Year 1!

June 2, 2018 at 7:13 am

We have been busy planning another exciting half term. We have new  role play areas  – ‘Science Labs!‘ We also have seaside areas and rock pools to explore.

In literacy we will begin with a week of reading, writing and performing poetry about summer and the seaside. We will then read Billy’s Bucket and the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and look at settings. Our design and technology lessons are linked to literacy and we will be designing and making our own sandwiches and writing instructions about how to make them.

In maths we will continue to develop our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. We will also be doing lots of practical maths based on time and money.

We will be looking at lots of maps, globes and atlases in our geography lessons.  The children will also learn about human and physical features, aerial maps, keys and how to use a compass. They will also look at world maps and name the oceans and continents. Can your child already name any of them?

We will be learning about Grace Darling in our history lessons. We will hopefully have a visit from the RNLI who will talk about their work and water safety.

We also have our trip to Blackhill Woods and sports day to look forward to.

Phew!! Another action packed half term in Year 1.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Monday.
