Vegetable fun in Year 1!

September 28, 2018 at 11:54 am

In literacy we read the story Oliver’s Vegetables. Click here for an online version.

We then tasted lots of vegetables and used adjectives to describe them. Can your child remember what an adjective is? The children then wrote sentences about which vegetables they liked and didn’t liked! Some children were extended and used adjectives in their writing and they thought of some great describing words such as crunchy cabbage, sloppy spinach and sour, sticky rhubarb.

In phonics we have revised th, ng, ai, oa. In our key skill lessons we practised forming the letters e, f and s and the digits 6, 7 and 8 correctly. We have also learnt how to read and write the following common exception words – be, we, she, he.

We have also looked at pieces of art by Cezanne. The children then used different media to create their own pictures of vegetables. These will be on display in our classrooms.

In maths we have been ordering numbers and thinking about using the vocabulary greater, greatest, less, least, bigger, smaller, larger, largest. We have also been comparing them using these words. We played a great game to help us practise this skill. We have also been using maths apparatus to make pictures. We will be using the cuisinaire rods, like we do with Numicon, to help us work with numbers. Here are some of our creations:

Click on the picture below. You can slide the smallest and largest hexagons to change the number range. Try up to 20 first and then increase the largest number if you’ve mastered it.

Favourite toys, place value and timelines!

September 21, 2018 at 11:02 am

In literacy we have been reading the story ‘Nothing’ by Mick Inkpen. Nothing is a little bear who gets left in the attic and doesn’t know his name or who his family is. It’s a lovely book and the children enjoyed listening to it.

They all talked about their special toy and wrote about it using simple sentences.

In phonics we revised ck, nk, sh and ch. Please help your child practise reading the phonemes and words we have put in their reading record. We have also learnt how to read and write the following common exception words – I, my, do, to, is, no, go, me, of.  Your child needs to practise these words in their red spelling book which they brought home today. We have also practised forming o, g and q cursively and the digits 3, 4, 5 correctly.

In maths we have been working on adding and taking away one. We used number lines, counters, tens frames and lots more to find out what is one more or one less than a given number. Can your child show you at home?

In history we introduced the concept of a time line. Using cubes to represent each year we placed different aged people on a time line. They had fun trying to guess how many cubes the teachers would need!!

The children all enjoyed using ‘Bug Club’ in their computing lesson. They have all brought home a letter with their user name and password so they can play it with you too.

In PHSE this half term the children will be thinking about playground games and working together to create a class set of playground rules. They had fun learning some new games this week.

Thank you to everyone who has returned their soup reply – the children are looking forward to cooking and eating it!

Have a great weekend.

Lots of fun learning in Year 1!

September 14, 2018 at 1:16 pm

In maths we have been learning about place value. We have been practising writing our numbers as well as thinking about how we can represent numbers differently, including words, using equipment and by drawing pictures.

We have been talking about our families in our literacy lessons. The children all drew a picture of their family and labelled it. We have also begun our daily phonic lessons. This week we have revised ll, ff, ss, and zz.

Each week the children will have key skills lessons. This half term we are focusing on the correct formation of the letters and digits. This week we looked at the ‘Curly Caterpillar’ family and practised writing c, a and d cursively and forming 0,1 and 2 correctly.

In history we looked at their baby photographs and talked about how they had changed. They thought about what they needed when they were a baby and what they need now. Look out for our ‘Guess Who?’ displays. Can you work out who all the babies are?

In our computing lesson we have learnt how to log on to the laptops and next week we will be looking at an online reading programme called Bug Club. Login details will be sent out next week so that you can do it at home.

In PE the children had fun outside doing lots of  SAQ (speed, agility, quickness) activities. Our second PE lesson every week will be focusing on gymnastics and the children will be learning different balances, jumps and rolls.

This week we started our exciting Friday afternoon lessons. The children will do different activities each week. This half term they will do RE, music, food skills and a tree walk.

We are visiting the school farm over the next weeks – please can your child bring in a pair of wellington boots to leave at school? They can use their new welly pegs to keep them together.

The children were very excited about their first homework task in their learning logs!! This work is due in on Wednesday 26th September. Thank you for all your support with reading, phonics, spellings and learning logs – it really does make a difference.

Don’t forget to bring your soft toy to school next week!

It is the last week of voting for the Leeds Children’s Mayor – Charlotte in Year 6 has been doing lots of campaigning. The children have all voted in school but may vote again online. Click on the link to watch Charlotte’s video and to find out how to vote online.

A busy first week in Year 1

September 7, 2018 at 2:49 pm

We have had a very busy four days! All the children have settled in really well and are getting used to the routines of Year 1. They have been investigating their new classrooms and outdoor area. Which area has your child enjoyed exploring the most? Can your child remember which hive they are in?

We have enjoyed getting to know the children. We have heard all the children read and they have a new book to share with you at home. Please help your child change their books before and after school.

We have also been to the school library and chosen a book – please share this with your child. We will change our library books every Friday.

We have also been busy creating self-portraits and our own bees. These are on display in our classrooms.

We have sent home a newsletter and we hope this helps answer questions about PE kit and reading books. We will be doing PE next week so please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school.

All the children have voted for ‘The Children’s Mayor’. They were excited that Charlotte Heap from our school was a candidate.

Just a reminder to please send a photograph of your child when they were a baby or toddler. It will be used for the history lesson next week and will go on our ‘Guess Who?’ display. We can print them in school if you email them  – alexandra.galbraith@farsleyfarfield.org.uk, edd.garlick@farsleyfarfield.org.uk or charlotte.bray@farsleyfarfield.org.uk.

We are looking forward to meeting lots of parents and carers next Wednesday – just pop into the classrooms between 3.30pm – 4.30pm.

Have a lovely weekend.

Welcome to Year 1

September 1, 2018 at 7:33 am

We hope that you have all had a great holiday and are ready for an exciting year. We have been busy getting the classrooms ready and planning lots of fun lessons and visits.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday morning. You will need to look for your peg label in the corridor, put your book bag in your colour hive box and find your drawer to put your fruit in. Then you can sit on the carpet and look at a book.

Have a look at some of our areas. Where would you like to play?

1G areas…

1B areas…

See you all soon!
