Alien fun in Year 1!

May 24, 2019 at 3:16 pm

Thank you to all the parents and other family members who came along to our phonic workshop this morning. We hope you enjoyed learning some new games and had fun doing all the alien activities. Please enjoy using the pack that we have sent home. Your support is really making a difference with their confidence when reading and writing the phonemes.

In literacy this week we have focused on suffixes. They have learnt how to use ed, est, er and ing. We have also heard all the children read individually and updated their books on ‘Bug Club’. We have revised air, ure, ear and are in phonics.

We have been learning about fractions in our maths lessons. This week we have focused on halves and quarters of shapes. We found out that half  means two equal parts and quarter means four equal parts.

We have also learnt about position, direction and movement. The children used vocabulary including turn, above, below, next to and between. A lot of the children didn’t know their left and right, please keep practising at home. They all enjoyed our practical work – especially getting a letter from Pob Bob the alien and going on a star hunt!

We have also been testing our knowledge of animals using Kahoot! The children had to answer multiple choice questions using the iPads. We had lots of animals experts who remembered all about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. The children enjoyed getting competitive and trying to answer questions the quickest.

Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Bermuda have been the latest destinations for our missing gingerbread man! Where will he go next?

Have a lovely half term holiday – we hope the sun shines!

Bridges and poo in Year 1!!

May 17, 2019 at 3:39 pm

Most weeks in Year 1 we are very busy and get up to all sorts of wonderful adventures and this week has been no exception!

In science we have been continuing to find out more about animals. We focused on the diet of animals and how we can categorise animals based on this. We learnt some new vocabulary to help us do this –

Herbivore – An animal that feeds on plants.

Carnivore – An animal that feeds on meat.

Omnivore – An animal that feeds on both plants and meat.

To help us find out what animals eat we had to do some rather messy investigating. We dissected animal poo to look for evidence of plants or meat (Don’t worry it was not real poo – although it was rather realistic!)

We found out about the diets of polar bears, lions, gorillas, hedgehogs, sheep and elephants. Can you child remember what they discovered about each animal?

All of our literacy work this week has been based on The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have read the story, watched a film based on the story and written our own versions. Luckily in Year 1 we have some fantastic imaginations, so rather than using the goats and the troll we decided to create our own characters. Our stories featured very interesting characters from unicorns to aliens.

Following on from this we received a letter from the goats asking us to make them some new bridges! We had a fabulous time choosing materials, figuring out how best to fasten our bridges together and making sure they were strong enough to carry the three goats.

Take a look at us testing out the strength of our creations…

In maths the children have had fun doing lots of practical sharing. We then looked at division and the children have been taught how to record division calculations and how to use the symbol ÷.

In phonics we have revised er, ir , ur , oi and oy. We are looking forward to seeing you all next Friday morning at the alien workshop. Hope you are all ready for a game of phonic bingo!

Our cheeky gingerbread man is still having fun exploring the world! This week he sent postcards from Italy, Germany, Amsterdam, Australia and New Zealand! Where will he go next?

Our caterpillars turned into butterflies and today we released them. Hope they enjoy exploring the Farfield grounds!

Have a lovely weekend.

Amazing Animals!!

May 10, 2019 at 1:54 pm

The highlight of our week was the visit from Noah’s Ark Animals. First we met the biggest type of owl in the world –an eagle owl called Nigel. Did you know that owls can’t move their eyes so they have to twist their heads round?

We saw two tortoises called Whizzy and Speedy. They didn’t move very fast but weed lots!!

The chinchilla was super soft and made a great hat.

Rainbow the chameleon could change colour so he was camouflaged and dangle upside down. Spotty the leopard gecko could lose his tail to a predator and grow a new one!

Willow the skunk smelt really bad – luckily she didn’t spray anyone because a bath of tinned tomatoes is the only way to remove the stench!

Dylan, the bearded dragon, had a race with a cricket. Who do you think won?

Finally some children bravely held Gripper the boa constrictor and a tarantula called Lily Lots of Legs!

In maths we have continued our work on arrays and multiplication. The children used arrays to represent repeated addition and multiplication e.g. 2 + 2 + 2 = and 3 x 2 =

In literacy we have written a recount about the animal workshop. The children tried hard to use time connectives in their work, including first, next, after that, then and finally. In phonics we have revised u-e, ue, ew, oo, au, aw, or. In our guided reading lesson we focused on apostrophes such as I’ll, don’t, you’re. We have set them an apostrophe game on Spelling Shed to play at home.

The cheeky gingerbread man is still on the run! This week he has been to France, Spain, the  Maldives and Hungary! Where will he go next? The children are enjoying looking at all the places he’s been using Google Earth, maps and atlases. We’ve even learnt some new languages! “Bonjour” “Ola” “Szia” They’ve brought home a map to share with you.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team

Run, run as fast as you can…

May 3, 2019 at 1:42 pm

What an exciting week we have had! We read the story of The Gingerbread Man and decided it would be fun to bake some of our own. We made an extra special one but it escaped!!! Have you seen him anywhere?

We made ‘Missing’ posters and put them up around school. The children also built lots of traps to try and catch him! To the children’s amazement we got a video of him running away and a postcard sent from Leeds. How did he get there? On Thursday we got postcards from Bolton Abbey and Whitby and on Friday he sent one from London and Dublin! Where will he go next?

In our grammar lesson the children were taught about prefixes and the children made prefix calculations e.g un + happy = unhappy and some then wrote sentences with prefixes in.

We have revised i-e, igh, ie, o-e, oa, oe, ow in phonics. Thank you for all your support at home – most children are now reading and writing the phonemes with more confidence.

In maths we have been looking at arrays. An array is a way of organising a number of objects in rows and columns to help you find how many you have.

Remember ROWS go across like a rowboat going across a river and COLUMNS go up and down like those that hold up a building!

We have set some activities on Mathletics that will help practise using arrays.

The children enjoyed their first MindMate lesson in PHSE thinking about similarities and differences between each other. Even though we all know each other really well the children found out some more interesting facts about each other and were shocked to find new people who they shared unexpected interests with!

We have started to learn about types of animals in science. We looked at various animals and had to decide if they were a mammal, amphibian, fish, bird or reptile. We played an interesting ‘What am I?’ game which the children really enjoyed.

We are looking forward to seeing some ‘real’ animals next Wednesday at our workshop. Thank you to everyone who has paid their contribution on ParentPay.

Enjoy the long weekend – we hope the sun shines!
