Geography

This week we had an exciting visitor all the way from a Desert in Africa!

We found out that Sunny the Meerkat likes to travel around the world and he was thinking of visiting the Arctic next. We went on fact hunt around the classroom and found out lots of facts about the Arctic. The children decided that the Arctic wouldn’t be the best place for a Meerkat.

We also created some amazing Polar Region paintings using water colours.

English

The children were so excited to read postcards from the meerkat, so we thought we would write a postcard back to him. The children wrote about all the facts they’d learnt about the Arctic. We hope he enjoys reading them!

We have learnt about split digraphs in phonics. We have been reading and writing words with a-e, e-e, i-e and o-e in them. Please practise reading the digraphs and words that we have put in their reading records. There is also a game on Spelling Shed to support this work.

Maths

In maths we have been looking at place value to 20 by splitting numbers into 10s and 1s. We have been using dienes and place value charts to help us. We have found out that it is easier to count on from 10 to find a total. We have also been problem solving and reasoning to work out why some numbers are greater than others.

Science

We have been thinking scientifically during our science lessons. We carried out an investigation using ice. The children had to decide where the ice would melt the quickest – inside or outside? And if a jacket around the ice would keep it from melting? This is the picture we used to stimulate our investigation. The children helped plan the investigation and made sure it was a fair test.

The children were amazed by the results as lots of their predictions were incorrect. Can your child explain what happened? Yes, the coat acted as an insulator and insulators keep cold things cold and hot things hot. So don’t forget to wrap your snowman in a jacket if it snows!

We have enjoyed exploring our new areas…

Have a great weekend.

This looks like such a fun week. Phoebe explained to me about the ice wrapped in the towel not melting as quickly. She also read me her letter to Sunny.

Frederike was very excited to spot her letter to Sunny. She’s disappointed she missed the ice experiment. It looks fantastic. She would like to know if she could do a small version of the experiment.

Sorry, hit thumb down by accident – ignore that! Yeah, really been enjoying hearing about Sunny’s adventures this week, Cate has had a lot of fun with this project 🙂
