English and Science
We began our new topic with a ‘Busy Body Day’ and the children had fun investigating and learning interesting facts about their body. The children began by drawing things that were in their body. We then looked in information books and correctly put the body parts in the right places. The children were interested in finding out body facts! Did you know your eyes see upside down and your veins and arteries would go around the world twice? They labelled a body and wrote sentences about some of the facts they had learnt. They also enjoyed looking at the model of the skeleton and created their own using chalk, paint and art straws.
Everyone was very excited about our virtual T shirt. We’ve had lots of fun using the app ‘Virtuali – tee’ to look inside a human body!!
The children have enjoyed their first week of ‘Phonic Detectives’. This week we focused on the digraphs ck/ff/ll/zz/ss/ng/ch/sh/th/wh/ph/qu/ar. They are all very keen to be detective of the day and win the prize! Thank you for your support at home completing the phonic spotting sheet.
The children have been busy exploring the new role play areas and investigating our senses displays.
We have been working hard to represent numbers to 50 using 10 frames, tens and ones, straws and part-whole models. We have also found missing numbers within 50 and solved one more and ones less problems. We have realised that the ‘ones’ increase when we add one more but decrease when we find one less.
We also had lots of fun at our ‘Body Olympics’. The children took part in the long jump, straw javelin and measuring different body parts.
Our PSHE unit this half term is ‘What is safe for our bodies?’ This week we have been talking about what is safe to go inside our bodies and on our skin. The children had to sort our weekly shop into safe, sometimes safe and never safe. This led to some very interesting discussions and the children were very aware of how to keep themselves safe.
We are looking forward to celebrating World Book Day next Thursday. We have got lots of great books to share and some fun activities prepared. We need lots of clean plastic pots, tubs and bags for one of our activities. Please have a look through your recycling! The ‘shelfie’ photographs are brilliant – keep sending them in! Remember there are other competitions they can do too, we have some great prizes!
Have a great weekend.

We have another busy and exciting half term planned in Year 1. We will be learning lots about our amazing bodies and exploring our five senses. Look at our new areas:
During the first week we are having a ‘Busy Body Day’. We will begin by labelling the human body and finding out and writing lots of interesting body facts. We will also have fun competing in the ‘Amazing Body Olympics’.
In our English lessons we will be writing facts about our bodies and the five senses and will also become chicken experts and write our own non-fiction book. We will also continue with our daily phonic lessons and be doing lots of reading.
In maths we will be doing lots of work about place value and also having fun with lots of practical measuring.
We will be doing lots of practical investigations based on the body in our science lessons. We will also become chicken experts! We will be visiting the school farm, so please can you make sure that your child has a pair of wellington boots in school. The children will also be creating their own ‘Chicken Books’ and making mini movies! We would like to share this work with you on Friday 3rd April at 9.15 in the North Hall – more details to follow.
Our computing lessons will be linked to science and maths and we will be using Data Loggers to investigate our heart rates.
In our PE lessons we are beginning our games unit of work. During our Friday afternoon rotation the children will be doing RE, food skills, music and art.
We hope your child’s amazing art is on display in your homes.
We are looking forward to seeing you all on Monday.

The highlight of our week was our amazing art gallery when the children exhibited their fabulous art work to the public. The children were very proud of their achievements and we hope you enjoyed the gallery.
We have continued with our story writing. This week we used the art work of Raphael Perez to inspire us. The children used their imagination and fell into a painting again! They planned a problem and resolution using a story mountain and then wrote their own stories. We had children flying in hot air balloons, getting swallowed by whales and jumping off skyscrapers with parachutes!
In phonics we have revised all the phonemes learnt so far this year. We have sent home a game for you to play with your child – please keep practising reading all the real and alien words. We also used ‘Spelling Shed’ to help us spell the tricky words.
The children have worked really hard in maths this week! We have been representing numbers to 50 and using the language of tens and ones. We have also helped our puppet Gertrude solve missing numbers on a part whole model too.
We have also had fun with shapes and art this week. The children were inspired by the art work of Gary Webb and Wassily Kandinsky and created 2D art work and 3D sculptures.
We enjoyed looking at the pop-up books that the Year 4s had written about vertebrates. We learnt some great animal facts!
Thank you for all your support this half term.

We have been working hard to find addition and subtraction fact families. If 12+1=13 we also know that 1+12=13. The children have also realised from these facts we can make subtractions such as 13-1=12. We also worked with our learning partner to find the missing numbers of addition and subtraction facts too.
This week we have read the story ‘Katie’s Picture Show’. In this book Katie explores an art gallery and touches the paintings and falls into them and has lots of amazing adventures.
We were very excited when we fell through a picture frame into a painting called ‘Winter’ by Zuzana Chalupova. This inspired us to plan our own stories with a problem and resolution.
In phonics we have focused on oi/oy, ee/ea/ey/e-e and i-e/igh.
We enjoyed sharing our T Rex books with our Year 5 reading buddies. They were very impressed with them!
We have been thinking about roles and responsibilities. We began by doing a ‘Talk with your feet’ task. The children were shown a picture of someone doing a job e.g. tidying a bedroom and had to decide whose responsibility it was – parents, children, people who work at school or everyone. It led to some great discussions. We then wrote a class set of responsibilities which included tidying our classrooms, helping setting the table at home and saving the World!!
We have been busy adding the finishing touches to our canvases. We can’t wait for you to see them next Thursday! Thank you for your £1 contributions on Parent Pay.
Have a great weekend.
