We have been creating our own fantasy settings for our dinosaur story this week. The children enjoyed using their imagination to think of their own scenes. We had jungle, space, underwater, volcano and castle settings. We then used these settings to help us plan and write a story. The story had a beginning, middle and end and the children used a story mountain to plan their story. They worked really hard and shared some very creative ideas.
We had a very exciting science lesson as we got a letter from Victor Velociraptor! He needed our help as his cave is leaking and he is getting wet. The children thought about how they could help and what materials were waterproof. He is now a happy dinosaur!
In maths we have been learning all about place value and the children have been looking at numbers and partitioning them into what tens and units a number has. For example 52 is made from 50 and 2. They used arrow cards and dienes apparatus to make the numbers. They have also been using lots of maths vocabulary including greatest, less than, most, fewest etc. They did lots of sorting and ordering of numbers up to 100. We also played bingo and a ‘show me a number’ game. Maybe you can play this at home?
Show me a number that …
- is more than 10
- is less than 10
- has 4 units/ones
- has 7 units/ones
- has 0 units/ones
- has 9 units/ones
- has 3 tens
- has 2 tens
- has 0 tens
- has 8 tens
- is an odd number
- is an even number
- is a mltiple of 2
- is a multiple of 5
- is a multiple of 10
In art we have started to look at the work of Pacita Abad. We have been using paint and mixing our own colours and worked on canvas. We are looking forward to sharing our finished work with you at our gallery on Wednesday 8th February at 2:30pm – your invitations have been sent home.
In computing, the children started to look at algorithms, which is when they follow and order instructions in a particular order. This week the children followed instructions to make toast.
Today IS really enjoyed their visit to Farsley Library. We shared a couple of fantastic dinosaur books and then discussed our favourite stories. We then all chose a book and brought it back to school. 1GJ will be going on their trip to the library in February.
We are very lucky to have such a wonderful library in our local area. Please check out the library’s website to see what is going on. This looks like a very exciting activity…
The phonics focus this week has been:
Please can you make sure that your child has their PE kit on their peg every day. Some children haven’t had their kit with them since Christmas.
Another very busy week with some super learning taking place, thank you for your continued support.
Have a great weekend.
The Year One team.

Watch out there are dinosaurs about! This week we have been finding out lots of interesting dinosaur facts. In our literacy lessons we have been writing facts about the Tyrannosaurus Rex. We researched their diet, size and habitat. Did you know a T-Rex had over 50 razor sharp teeth and used them to eat other dinosaurs? The children thought carefully about using capital letters at the beginning of sentences and full stops at the end. Some children were able to use the conjunctions and, because and but to explain their dinosaur facts further. What facts can your child remember about the mighty T-Rex?
We have been ‘Art Gallery Managers’ and we learnt about different types of art including installation art, sculpture and collage. The children had to sort lots of different art into groups and decide upon their likes and dislikes.
In maths we continued our work on time. We have looked at seconds, minutes and hours and thought carefully about the activities you can do in these time intervals. We have also looked at other time vocabulary such as today, yesterday, tomorrow, before, after, first, next, after etc. and thought carefully about a timetable of the school day.

On Wednesday and Thursday we visited Cartwright Hall Art Gallery and had a great time exploring art. We took part in a fantastic session where we created a map using graphite pencils, copied Lowry’s art using 2D shapes, drew self portraits in the style of Andy Warhol, and we even jumped into a painting – bringing it to life using our acting skills! The children were very creative and enjoyed the session. They also learnt a few new skills, such as how to use a pencil to add shading and how 2D shapes can add interesting effects. Hopefully we will be able to show off these new skills in our art gallery on Wednesday 8th February at 2:30pm – your invitations have been sent home today. Thank you so much to the parents who helped us on these trips – we really appreciate your support.

The children in 1GJ had another lovely session with their Year 6 buddy. The children have written their own dinosaur information books during our literacy lessons this week and they shared them with their buddy. Their buddy then gave them some feedback using ‘two stars and a wish’. Then the year 6 child read a story that they had written and the children gave them feedback. We were very impressed with all the positive comments they wrote.

In literacy we have been exploring winter poems. We have read lots of poems and the children have written their own. They used some interesting adjectives and described a winter scene well. Some children had a go at using similes and metaphors in their poems and created phrases such as ‘winter is as white as a fluffy, soft blanket’ and ‘winter is as cold as shiny, slippery ice.’
In our phonic lessons we have moved onto alternate spelling patterns such as ai, ay, a-e. Please keep practising the digraphs with your child at home. Each week we will add a sheet in your child’s reading diary and this will tell you the sounds we are focusing on during that particular week. We shall also add it to the blog. Don’t forget to practise the nonsense words too!
This was this week’s phonic focus.
We have been thinking scientifically during our science lessons. We carried out an investigation using ice.
The children had to decide where the ice would melt the quickest – inside or outside? And if a jacket around the ice would keep the ice from melting? This is the picture we used to stimulate our investigation
The children were amazed by the results as lots of their predictions were incorrect. Can your child explain what happened? Yes, the coat acted as an insulator and insulators keep cold things cold and hot things hot. So don’t forget to wrap your snowman in a jacket if it snows next week!
In maths, we have been practising telling the time. We have been reading 0’clock and half past, showing o’clock and half past on our own analogue clocks, adding hands to empty clocks to show the time plus we had some tricky word problems to answer. We’ve also been learning how to order and spell the days of the week and months of the year.
It would be great if the children could carry on practising telling the time at home.
Click on the clock for some fun games to help support further learning at home.
Thank you to everyone who has returned their trip letter for next week. This is a full day visit and the children need to bring a packed lunch, in a rucksack or bag that they can carry, and wear their school uniform.
Please make sure that your child has their PE kit and reading book in school every day and their library book on a Friday.
Have a great weekend.

We hope that you have all had a lovely holiday. We have lots of exciting lessons and activities planned for the next half term. Our topic is ‘What happens in an art gallery?’ and we will be learning all about different types of art and creating our own artwork using various skills and techniques. We even have a real artist coming into school to teach us how to create fused glass. We also have our trip to Cartwright Hall Art Gallery on the 11th and 12th January. Please can you return your child’s consent form during the first week back. We still need more parents to support us on this visit. You will have an opportunity to look at all the amazing work we create at our own art gallery on Wednesday 8th February from 2.30pm in the school hall. More details will be sent home soon.
In literacy we are beginning by having a winter themed week and will be reading and writing our own winter poems. We then move onto a unit of work about dinosaurs and fantasy settings and the children will be creating their own characters and settings and writing stories. We have transformed our role play areas into dinosaur caves.
In maths we will be spending the first two weeks focusing on time. The children will be reading, writing and ordering the days of the week and months of the year. They will also have fun with clocks and learn to tell the time using o’clock and half past. We then will be doing lots of work on place value, number bonds and addition and subtraction.
In science we will be developing our working scientifically skills and doing various investigations including experimenting with ice and using materials to keep a dinosaur dry!
Our RE unit for this half term is ‘What does it mean to belong to a group?’ We will be talking about groups they belong to and then comparing differences and similarities between a church and a mosque.
Our PPA time will continue on a Friday afternoon and the children will have fun during the rotation of lessons. This half term they will be doing art, music and food and cooking.
Phew! What a busy and exciting half term.
We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 3rd January.
