Look what is happening in Year 1!

Vegetable fun in Year 1!

September 25, 2020 at 11:31 am

The children were very excited to find a trail of vegetables in our classrooms! We followed the trail and found a letter from a boy called Oliver. He had left us a book to read.

Oliver also left us some tasty vegetables to taste. We all enjoyed trying lots of vegetables and used adjectives to describe them. Can your child remember what an adjective is? The children then wrote sentences about which vegetables they liked and didn’t liked! Some children were extended and used adjectives in their writing and they thought of some great describing words such as crunchy cabbage, sloppy spinach and sour, sticky rhubarb.

In phonics we have revised nk, ck, sh and ch. In our key skill lessons we practised forming the letters e, f and s and the digits 0,1, 2 and 3 correctly. We have also learnt how to read and write the following common exception words – I, the, no, go, to.

This week we looked at representing a number in lots of different ways. We built the number out of cubes and used counters on a ten frame. We also drew a picture to represent the number and then wrote the number as both a numeral and a word too.

We also recapped one more than and one less than. We used counters and number tracks to help us.

We looked at pieces of art by Cezanne. The children then used different media to create their own pictures of vegetables. These will be on display in our classrooms.

We introduced the concept of a time line. Using cubes to represent each year we placed different aged people on a time line. They had fun trying to guess how many cubes the teachers would need!

This half term the children will be thinking about playground games and working together to create a class set of playground rules. They had fun learning some new games this week. We have played Simon Says, hopscotch, skipping and “Farmer, farmer may we cross your river?”

The children all enjoyed using ‘Bug Club’ on the laptops. They have all brought home a letter with their user name and password so they can play it with you too.

Hedgehog Rescue!

The children were very excited to find a real hedgehog at playtime today! They named it Spikey! As we are now all hedgehog experts we knew it shouldn’t be outside during the day so we rang the Hedgehog hospital. Someone is coming to collect Spikey and check that he is ok.

Hedgehog Update…

Spikey was collected by Hog House Rescue and she is actually a girl! She is around 10 weeks old and in good health from what they can see. If you go to Hogg House rescue on face book they are going to upload some photos of her at the rescue centre. She will be put onto a heat blanket and she will be kept with them until she is 300g and then released into the wild.

Other Year 1 news…

Mrs Galbraith will be teaching 1B every Wednesday morning whilst Mrs Broadhead has her NQT time.

Thank you for all your lovely comments on the Year 1 blog – the children really enjoy reading them. You can click on the ‘thumbs up’ symbol if you have liked reading this post.

We will be going to the school farm next week, so if possible please can your child bring a pair of wellington boots to school.

Have a super weekend.

Lots of fun learning in Year 1!

September 18, 2020 at 1:41 pm

We have been talking about our families and the children all drew a picture of their family and labelled it. We have also begun our daily phonic lessons. This week we have revised ll, ff, ss, and zz. In our handwriting lesson we looked at the ‘Curly Caterpillar’ family and practised writing c, a, d and o cursively.

We have been learning lots about each other through number. We have been discussing how old we are, how many people we have in our family, how many pets we have and how many teeth we have lost! This has helped us to practice counting and number formation.

We had fun looking at their baby photographs and talking about how they had changed. They thought about what they needed when they were a baby and what they need now. The children enjoy looking at our ‘Guess Who?’ displays.

On Tuesday, in our outdoor PE lesson, the children had fun experimenting with different ways of running. In our second PE lesson on Thursday we focused on gymnastics. We had fun exploring movements and balances in a wide way.

We have all enjoyed painting and drawing our self portraits.

This week the children have practised logging on to a laptop. They will be bringing home some passwords for some programs they can explore at home, including Bug Club, Spelling Shed and Mathletics.

Friday Afternoons

This week we started our exciting Friday afternoon lessons. The children will take part in different activities each week. This half term they will do RE, music, a tree walk and PE.

Other Year 1 news…

We are visiting the school farm over the next weeks – please can your child bring in a pair of wellington boots to leave at school. Please make sure that their name is on their boots.

The children were very excited about their first homework task in their learning logs!! This work is due in on Tuesday 29th September. Thank you for all your support with reading, phonics, spellings and learning logs – it really does make a difference.

A special visitor in Hedgehog class

1GK were very lucky to have a visit from Mrs Puddiphatt’s African Pygmy Hedgehog – Hoggle. The children have learnt so much about Hoggle already and were very excited. They spent the afternoon perfecting a wooden fence so that Hoggle wouldn’t escape (it didn’t quite work!) The children behaved so well and didn’t scream and run away. Well done Hedgehog class.

Rabbit fun!

1B have been busy painting rabbits to display in their classroom.

Virtual Assembly!

We all enjoyed ‘seeing’ the other KS1 classes at our Special Mention assembly. Each week two children, from each class, will be chosen by their teacher to receive a special certificate.

Have a super weekend.

A busy first week in Year 1

September 11, 2020 at 3:08 pm

All the children have settled in really well and are getting used to the routines of Year 1. They have been investigating their new classrooms and outdoor area. Which area has your child enjoyed exploring the most? Can your child remember which colour hive they are in?

Fun exploring in Year 1…

Reading and Library

We have heard all the children read and they have a new book to share with you at home. We have also been to the school library and chosen a book – please share this with your child. The children will change their reading books and library books every Friday.

We have sent home a newsletter and we hope this helps answer questions about PE kit and reading books. We will be doing PE next week so please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school.

Just a reminder to please send in a photograph of your child when they were a baby or toddler. It will be used for the history lesson next week and will go on our ‘Guess Who?’ display. We can print them in school if you email them  – [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected]

Have a lovely weekend.

Welcome to Year 1!

September 3, 2020 at 2:47 pm

We hope that you have all had a great holiday and are ready for an exciting year. We have been busy getting the classrooms ready and planning lots of fun lessons and visits.

1GK are also going to be known as Hedgehog Class.

1B are also going to be known as Rabbit Class.

In our English lessons we will enjoy reading ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and ‘Kitchen Disco’ and in maths we will be learning about place value and addition and subtraction.

In our science lessons we will be visiting the farm. We will be ‘plant detectives’ and make some delicious vegetable soup! Yum!

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Monday morning. You will need to look for your peg label in the corridor, put your book bag in your colour hive box and find your drawer to put your fruit in. Then you can sit on the carpet and look at a book.

Have a look at some photographs of your new classroom. Where would you like to play?

It will be used in our history lessons and will go on our ‘Guess Who?’ displays. We can print them in school if you email them  – [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected]

Have a great weekend and we will see you all on Monday.
