Look what is happening in Year 1!

We hope that you all had a good weekend and are ready for hopefully the last week of remote learning!

Live Lessons

This is what we are learning over the next two days:

  • Phonics –  Revise a-e, ai and ay
  • English/Science – Learn about the five senses. Write the first two pages of your senses book.
  • Maths – Place Value – Tens and ones
  • PE – Dance, linking 2 movements together.

Phonics

On Monday we are going to revise the split a-e digraph. Watch this video and help Geraldine read the split a-e words:

On Tuesday we are going to revise the alternative spellings that all make the same a-e / ay / ai sound.

PE

Last week we started to look at dance and thinking how you could move like an animal. You may have found a piece of music that reminds you of the animal you chose.

This week you need to think of a small animal and 2 ways in which you could move to represent that animal. Can you link 2 different movements together? Can you use facial expressions? Can you perform your movements for someone to guess the animal you are? Good luck!

World Book Day Competition

Don’t forget to take part in our competition. We would like you to tell us about your favourite story character. You could write a character description, draw and label your favourite character or even create your own character! Please send all entries to your child’s class teacher by Friday 5th March.

World Book Day

Next Thursday is World Book Day, but we are going to celebrate this day on Friday 5th March. We are going to have a fun day of enjoying books! We thought you could be comfy and stay in your pyjamas all day, whether you are at home or in school!

We will choose a winner from each class and we have some great prizes. Please email all entries to your child’s class teacher by Friday 5th March. So far this week we have practised working out a numbers value by counting in groups of 10. Now we are learning how to count forwards and backwards up to 50. Join Mrs Kumar at 10.15am on Wednesday for a lesson about counting within 50

For our warm up you will need your 50 number square from your pack.

Now answer questions 1 to 4 (pages 4, 5 & 6) in your White Rose Maths booklet.

Thursday’s lesson

When we calculate one less we know the number will be smaller.

Did you know that you have 206 bones in your body? The smallest bone is in your ear and the longest bone is in your leg.

In your pack there is a piece of black card, some white card and some white art straws. Can you use them to make a skeleton? Here are some that we made in school last year…

Welcome back! We hope that you all had a fun week off and are ready to get busy again!

Phonic Detectives

This half term, during our daily phonic lessons, we are going to become ‘Phonic Detectives.’ This will help the children revise all the phonemes in a fun way. In the pack there are some phoneme spotting sheets and a special highlighter pen. The children need to highlight the phonemes and read the words – some are real words and some are nonsense words.

Please don’t let your child do all the sheets at once – look on the blog or join the daily phonic lesson to find out which sheets to do each day. (There are more details on the letter below.) We have some prizes for the children if they are super ‘phonic detectives’.

Let’s start thinking about numbers with a quick warm up…

Over the next few weeks we are going to be learning about the value of numbers up to 50. This will include learning to count in steps of 2 and 10 and finding one more/one less than a given number.

Let’s start by counting on from 20.


Cut up your towers of ten and your ones. Can you create your own numbers? Count your towers in steps of 10. What is the smallest and biggest number you can make?

Last half term we focused on ball skills using our feet. So for the next few weeks we are going to look at some ‘dance’. This week sees us think about animals and how they move? Can you find a piece of music which reminds you of your animals?

Try and see if you can move high and low, can you move over or under things in your animals habitat? Can you change direction? See if someone in your house can guess what animal you are.

It’s tricky word Friday! Time for another tricky word rap…

Can you read each of these tricky words? Why not go on a tricky word hunt and see how many of these words you can find. You can find these words in lots of other places as well as your books. You might spot one on a television advert or on a sign whilst you are out for a walk!

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day. This year it will be celebrated on Tuesday 16th February.

It is a Christian celebration that marks the start of Lent and is the beginning of the 40 days leading into Easter. Some Christian families give things up for Lent – such as chocolate. But, you might be wondering, what does that have to do with pancakes? Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the fast for Lent. Making pancakes is a simple and tasty way to use up all of these ingredients!  Will you be making pancakes this year? Have fun!

Seen as this is the last week of this half term I thought we would get physical to help develop a healthy heart. Start by trying this Disney warm up activity. Can you tell a grown up why warming up before any physical activity is important?

In Year 1 the children don’t need to spell all the words correctly. They know to use their phonemes to sound out e.g. hors for horse and climd for climbed. The only words that they need to spell correctly are the Year 1 tricky words – a copy was sent home in your packs.

  • Phonics – igh/ ie/ i-e phonemes and compound words
  • English – Write the middle and end of a story. Complete the I wonder task.
  • Maths – Addition – find the missing number/number bonds to 10 & 20

  • Computing – Algorithms, giving specific instructions to move an object.

On Wednesday we are revising the i-e, ie and igh phonemes. They are spelt different but sound the same in words like life, pie and flight.

There is a phoneme spotter in your pack for you to complete. Read the text and highlight any words that have the ie/ i-e or igh phoneme in them. Here is a copy:

On Thursday we are looking at compound words. A compound word is when two or more smaller words join together to make a new word.

Can you work out and spell these compound words? Try to put each of the words into a sentence.

Did you have fun falling into the snowy painting? Over the next two days you are going to use your plan to write the middle and end of your story. I have written the beginning for you…

Now you need to write the rest of the story. (You don’t need to copy my beginning out.) Use your plan to help you. Write on a lined page in your yellow book. Remember to miss a line in case you need to edit your work. Here is the success criteria for your work…

When you have finished read your story to a grown up. Does it make sense? Are you happy with it? Does it have a middle and an end? Do you need to improve it?

On Thursday morning Mrs Galbraith will explain the ‘I wonder…’ task that is in your pack. Join the google meet at 10.15am to hear the beginning of the story about Solomon Crocodile.

You could also have a go at one of the comprehension activities from your pack. Remember everything you have learnt from the Reading Dogs.

Maths

You have all done so well with subtracting one number from another. Now it is to remind ourselves how to add two numbers together.

Wednesday’s math’s lesson

Now let’s get started with our quick fire questions…

Can you calculate the answer to this question? How many other ways can you write it?

Well done – 6 + 7 = 13, 7 + 6 = 13 and 13 = 6 + 7, 13 = 7 + 6. All the calculations are all the same even when they are in a different place.

The next calculation is in a part whole model. Can you use counters and/or the number line to calculate the answer?

Now we have a calculation which has a missing number. We know that adding another number to 12 will make 16, so let’s put our pen on number 12 and count how many jumps it takes us to reach number 16.

Thursday’s math’s lesson

Can you remember the number bonds to 10? They will help you to learn the number bonds to 20.

We know the answer equals 20 on each side. So put your pen on the number 19 and see how many jumps it takes to reach 20. Yes, the missing number is 1.

If you haven’t already completed the questions given yesterday, see if you can complete them today.

PSHE

Do you know what the word unique means? It means that you are one of a kind and special. What makes you unique? Are you good at something? Do you have a favourite outfit to wear? Are you a good friend? Listen to the story of Elmer and see if he is unique…

Elmer worried about being different but in the end was happy with who he was. The lesson from the book is that if we are all the same then everything would be terribly boring. Being different is a good thing and differences are what makes things fun and interesting. On your sheet can you draw in the circle what makes you unique. It might be something you like to do or wear. Then you can complete the sentence “I am unique because…”

Join Mrs Galbraith at 1.15pm on Thursday to listen to the story and talk more about the task.

Computing

We have learnt that algorithms give us specific instructions to make or do something. You have given verbal instructions to get someone to move to another place or pick up and object and you have learnt how to give direct instructions to design and make a Mr Potato head.

Algorithms are so important if we are going to make or do something correctly. This week we are to use the programme 2Go in Purple Mash

First of all you need to log on to Purple Mash and in the search engine put 2Go. Now launch the app. Click on the right arrow to choose which background you would like.

Before you start we need to make sure you have the correct tools to use. Click on the grey wheel at the top – this is the settings button. We are using the left, right, up and down buttons.

Next you need to click the tab on this page which reads ‘general’. We are then going to choose allow programming (slide right) . This will allow you to select a number of instructions/directions to move your object.

You need to choose where you would like to move your object to. I chose to move the king to the house. Click the purple directional arrows on to your grid. Then press play to see if your object gets to where you wanted them to go. There are lots of different backgrounds to choose from. Have fun!
