We have continued to read different versions of Jack and the Beanstalk and looked in detail at the giants in the books. The children then wrote a description of a giant using lots of great right choice words.
In grammar this week we have been focusing on plurals. The children did various tasks and have been looking at the spelling patterns. They matched singular and plural words and sorted them according to their endings s/es/ies.
We have revised a-e/ai/ay/ea/e-e/ey/ee/oa/oe/ow/o-e in our daily phonic lessons.
This week we have been learning about capacity and volume.
The children have had lots of fun showing us containers which are full, almost full, empty, half full, almost empty. We have compared the size of containers and found out their capacity by using cups to measure.
We have also solved some capacity problems…

This week we have looked carefully at the parts of a plant and labelled them. Can your child remember where the roots, bulb, stem, leaves and petals are? Click on the link below to find out more…
Enjoy the bank holiday weekend – see you on Tuesday!

What a busy first week back we have had. The children have had a lot of fun exploring our new areas.
English and Science
We have been reading different versions of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children were very excited to receive a letter from Jack asking them for help to plant his magic beans. We went to the school farm and we have all planted a bean. Will they grow? What might be at the top of them?
The children all chose a fantasy setting that they would like to have at the top of their beanstalk. They then wrote a description of their setting, using lots of right choice words.
We have also been looking at how to use ? ! and . correctly in our grammar lessons. Can your child tell you or write down a question sentence? In phonics we revised ck, ff, ll, ng, ss, zz, ch, ph, qu, sh, th, wh and ar.
We have kicked off the term learning all about weight and mass. We have learnt how to use the words heavier than, lighter than and the same when comparing different objects. the children have used non standard measures like cubes to measure how much objects weigh. We have also solved weight and mass problems.
Bean investigation and life cycles
We have learnt about the life cycle of a bean and started an investigation about what conditions a bean needs to grow the best. We made sure it was a ‘fair test’.
Click on the link below to find out more about life cycles…
This short video clip Shooting sprouts shows seeds germinating. Encourage your children to talk about what they see happening. The root appears first from each seed, followed by a shoot and the first leaves.
The children were excited when a package arrived in school. It was some caterpillars! We are going to look after them and hopefully they will turn into butterflies. We have been learning about their life cycle too.
We have something very exciting to build soon in Year 1! We need various sized cardboard boxes, clean yogurt pots, plastic tubs etc…
Have a lovely weekend.

We have another exciting half term ahead. We have planned lots of super activities and have been busy getting our classrooms ready. Look at our new areas…
Does your child have a pet at home? Please can you send in a photograph of your child with their pet to display on the wall in our pet shops. Photographs can also be emailed to the class teachers and we will print them at school.
Spring and Plants
This half term we are focusing on Traditional Stories, including Jack and the Beanstalk, The Gingerbread Man and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We will be looking carefully at the characters and using lots of adjectives to describe them. We will also be writing our own versions of traditional stories.
In our grammar lessons we will be learning about prefixes, suffixes and plurals. We will continue with our reading lessons and in our phonic sessions we will be revising all the phonemes.
We start this half term looking at weight and mass. We will then be learning about capacity, counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, making equal groups, arrays and doubles (multiplication). Finally we will learn about halves and quarters.
We will begin our new science topic by learning about seeds, plants and life cycles. We will then move onto learning about animals – types, habitats, diets and life cycles.
We have a special habitat ready for some visitors in our classrooms. What do you think might live in here?
Design and Technology
We will have fun designing and creating bridges for the Billy Goats to use. Will they stop the troll? How many goats will their bridge hold?
We will hopefully be doing most of our PE lessons outside next half term. Your child needs some appropriate trainers or pumps.
Please can you make sure that all your child’s clothing is clearly labelled. We have a lot of lost property in the box in our corridor.
Phew! Another exciting half term in Year 1! We are looking forward to seeing you all on Monday.

The children have finished writing their chicken books and they are very proud of them. This week they wrote about chicken poo! They also created a contents page and index. Well done Year 1 – you are now authors and illustrators.
In phonics we have revised all the phonemes. Please keep practising reading and writing them all at home.
We have continued learning more about length including how to measure objects accurately using a ruler. We have also looked at what we would use to measure a variety of objects such as a tree, football pitch or a pencil – would we use a metre stick or a ruler?
The children have been using length measurements to work out the combined length of 2 objects. Writing the calculation and calculating the answer.
We have also learnt how to subtract lengths. Looking at the difference between 2 lengths. How much further did the ant crawl to the ladybird?
All the children took part in a measuring Olympics. We talked about the Olympics and what sporting activities they include. We then had a go at a long jump and javelin and measured the distance we or the javelin (straw travelled). The children also measured their height, hand span and arm span.
This week we have been finding out about the Christian celebration – Easter. We read and discussed the Easter story. The children had fun on an Easter hunt looking for various objects and rolling eggs down the hill.
Spiky has returned
The children were very excited that Spiky was well enough to return to live back in our school grounds where we found him. We couldn’t believe how much he had grown! He liked his new willow hog house and happily wandered off to have an explore. Welcome home Spiky!
Have a great holiday – hope the sun shines!
