Lighthouses, place value and animal fun!

June 25, 2021 at 12:31 pm

English

We are really enjoying reading ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’ by Ronda and David Armitage.

We also had lots of fun using props to act out the story. The children have started to re-tell the story in their own mini books.

In phonics we have revised ie/i-e/igh/oo/ew/ue/oa/oe/o-e/ow/er/ir/ur. Please keep practising reading and writing words with all theses phonemes in at home. Can your child spot any in their books?

Maths

We have been looking at the place value of numbers up to 100. We started by practising counting forwards and backwards within 100, this included counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We looked to find patterns in number sequences. Can you recognise any patterns in the numbers below?

We have also partitioned numbers into tens and ones.

Finally we looked at comparing numbers using the words ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’. We remembered the importance at looking at the tens in each number to help us to compare 2 numbers.

Geography

This week we have been learning about the continents and oceans of the world. We discussed where children had been on holidays and what the weather was like. We then looked at the 7 continents of the world. How many continents can your child remember?

We enjoyed singing these fun songs…

Sam’s Safari

We all thoroughly enjoyed our animal workshop. We met some amazing animals and learnt lots of interesting facts. There was Mo the frog, Tony the salamander, Bertie and Spike the lizards, Titch the tortoise, Flash the snake, Smartie the chicken, Jemima the duck, Holiday the armadillo and Pinto the chinchilla! What an exciting morning!

PTA Mountain Challenge

Thank you for all your support with this PTA event. There has been lots of walking and lots of money raised – well done.

These three Year 1 boys decided they wanted to climb a real mountain! Here they are on their adventure to the top of Ingleborough. They walked 11 miles each – well done boys!

Have a super weekend,

Billy’s Bucket and more fraction fun!

June 18, 2021 at 1:29 pm

English

We have been reading the story ‘Billy’s Bucket’. The children had fun creating their own fantasy setting that was at the bottom of their bucket. They thought of some amazing places including fairgrounds, planets, magical castles and tropical islands. They then used adjectives to describe their setting.

In phonics we have revised split digraphs and a-e/ai/ay/ea/ee/e-e/ey. We have also been doing our final phonic screening check. The children have all tried really hard and we will share their results with you soon.

Maths

Last week we looked at finding a half of an object or a quantity. This week we are finding out about 1/4. Four equal parts make a whole.

Maths in action…

History

In history we have been looking at photos at the seaside. The children identified they were from a long time ago because they were black and white and because of what the people were wearing.

We looked at the activities we might do at the beach in the past and in the present time. The children did find that there are seaside activities that people did in the past, that we do now – sunbathing, swimming and building sandcastles.

Geography

This week we have learnt about the United Kingdom. The children have enjoyed learning facts about each country. Can they show you on a map where England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are? Can they remember the capital cities and describe the flags?

1GK at Rodley Nature Reserve

We had a fantastic time at the nature reserve. We had fun pond dipping and exploring the beautiful grounds. We spotted some amazing wildlife including sand martins, a heron and lots of damselflies. The children were all very enthusiastic and well behaved. Well done 1GK!

Science Fun!

Each week we will be introducing ‘Experiment of the week’ in our science labs. This week 1GK have been exploring ramps and 1B are investigating floating and sinking.

1B Bouncy Castle Fun!

Thanks to our golden ticket winner 1B had lots of bouncy castle fun on Tuesday.

PTA Mountain Challenge

We have now exceeded our 400 mile target! This week in Year 1 we have walked a combined total of 216 miles at school. Well done to everyone who has also added on to the totals at home.

Fun with poetry and fractions

June 11, 2021 at 1:22 pm

English

We have had a busy first week back. We have been reading and performing seaside poems. We began by reading lots of poems in our hive groups and then chose one to practise and perform to the rest of the class. This was good fun and some children really enjoyed performing!

We then moved onto writing class poems about the seaside. The children thought of some great ideas.

Look at us performing our poems…

In phonics we have revised the phase 3 phonemes and in our grammar lesson we learnt about suffixes. This week we focused on using er and est.

Maths

We start this half term by learning about fractions – finding half. We are working out half of objects/shapes and of a quantity.

This is what our learning of fractions looks like:

Geography

We have started our geography topic ‘Wonderful World’ and began by discussing what geography is and used globes, maps, Google Earth and atlases to help us. The children discussed and sorted human features e.g. shops, harbours and physical features e.g. cliffs, beach. We also looked for features around our school.

Science

The children are enjoying our ‘Science Laboratories’.

All the children enjoyed some ‘wow’ science where we had fun putting mentos in diet coke! Can they remember why it exploded?

PTA Mountain Challenge

All the children have walked half a mile today. You only have another six and a half miles to go!! Keep walking Year 1!

Golden Ticket Winners

We were very lucky in Year 1 as we had four winners from the PTA Golden Ticket event. In 1GK we had a Queen for the day and another winner could choose a friend to bring their scooter to school.

1B had a child working as an office junior (Mrs Walton said he did a superb job)! 1B will also be having some bouncy castle fun next week!

Have a lovely weekend,

Welcome back to the final half term in Year 1!

June 6, 2021 at 12:56 pm

We have been busy planning another exciting half term. We have new role play areas  – ‘Science Labs!‘ We also have seaside areas and rock pools to explore.

English

We will begin with a week of reading, writing and performing poetry about the seaside. We will then move onto reading Billy’s Bucket and the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and do lots of fun tasks based on these two books.

Maths

Our maths this half term will look at fractions – finding a half and a quarter of a shape, object and quantity. Place value where we will count forwards and backwards within 100, compare, order and partition numbers and also calculate one more/less than a given number. Money which we will learn about the value of coins and count them (counting in 2s, 5s and 10s will help with this). At the end of the summer term we will learn to tell the time to the hour and half past, write and compare time. So a busy last half term!

Design and Technology

Our design and technology lessons are linked to English and we will be designing and making our own sandwiches and writing instructions about how to make them.

Geography

The children will be looking at maps, atlases and globes and finding out about where they live and other parts of the World. In preparation for this work please can you talk to your child about places they have visited either in this country or abroad. Can they find it on a map? How did they travel there? Was it a hot or cold country? Was it a town, city, seaside or countryside? We will also be using the app ‘Google Earth’ to explore the World. Please can you help your child learn their home address and postcode.

History

We will be learning about what seaside holidays were like in the past. We will also be learning about Grace Darling in our history lessons.

Seaside in the Past | Vintage beach photos, Beach, Waves on the beach

Rodley Nature Reserve and Animal Workshop

We are looking forward to our visits to Rodley Nature Reserve and our animal workshop with Sam’s Safari. Please make sure that you return the trip consent forms and pay for the workshop on ParentPay.

Phew!! Another action packed half term in Year 1.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.
