Fun with poetry and fractions
Friday 11th June | No comments yet
We have had a busy first week back. We have been reading and performing seaside poems. We began by reading lots of poems in our hive groups and then chose one to practise and perform to the rest of the class. This was good fun and some children really enjoyed performing!
We then moved onto writing class poems about the seaside. The children thought of some great ideas.
Look at us performing our poems…
In phonics we have revised the phase 3 phonemes and in our grammar lesson we learnt about suffixes. This week we focused on using er and est.
We start this half term by learning about fractions – finding half. We are working out half of objects/shapes and of a quantity.
This is what our learning of fractions looks like:
We have started our geography topic ‘Wonderful World’ and began by discussing what geography is and used globes, maps, Google Earth and atlases to help us. The children discussed and sorted human features e.g. shops, harbours and physical features e.g. cliffs, beach. We also looked for features around our school.
The children are enjoying our ‘Science Laboratories’.
All the children enjoyed some ‘wow’ science where we had fun putting mentos in diet coke! Can they remember why it exploded?
PTA Mountain Challenge
All the children have walked half a mile today. You only have another six and a half miles to go!! Keep walking Year 1!
Golden Ticket Winners
We were very lucky in Year 1 as we had four winners from the PTA Golden Ticket event. In 1GK we had a Queen for the day and another winner could choose a friend to bring their scooter to school.
1B had a child working as an office junior (Mrs Walton said he did a superb job)! 1B will also be having some bouncy castle fun next week!
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
