We have enjoyed our last three days in Year 1. Both 1B and 1GK have been an absolute pleasure to teach. Keep being the best you can be in Year 2.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish our Muslim families a fantastic Eid. We hope you have enjoyed your celebrations this week.
Thank you for your kind wishes, cards and presents. We hope that you all have a lovely summer holiday.

English and History
In English and history we have been learning about a real life saver. The children found a mystery suitcase with some clues inside and a boat! They wrote some great questions to try and find out who the suitcase belonged to and discovered it was Grace Darling. To find out more about this brave hero click here.
We have checked how many of the Year 1 key words the children can read and write. Many children could read and write them all – well done!
In maths this week we are continuing to learn about time. Looking at different units of time – second, minute, hour, day.
When comparing time we can use words such as first, earlier, slower, later, last, faster. For example:
We can also compare time on clocks, for example:
You could try a fun activity at home. Set a timer to accurately time how long it will take you to do different daily tasks. For example, how long would it take for you to:
- Brush your teeth
- Eat your lunch
- Get dressed
- Walk a lap of your local park
Can you record it using the best minutes of time – seconds, minutes or hours? Have fun!
The children had a super sports day and each hive gave 100% effort in all their races. It was lovely to see so many parents supporting this event – thank you.
Both 1B and 1GK spent time with their new Year 2 teacher on Thursday morning. 1GK will be taught by Mrs Lace and Mrs Loveridge will be teaching 1B. Mrs Wilson teaches in Year 2 on a Monday and Tuesday.
The children will spend more time with their Year 2 teachers on Monday 19th July. They will have time to explore their new classrooms and get to know their teachers.
Enjoy the weekend and we will see you for the last three days of Year 1!!

This week we are learning all about money! We have been looking at recognising coins from 1p up to £2 and notes from £5 to £50.
It has been interesting to hear what the children think they can buy using coins and notes! Perhaps you could talk to your child about the coins/notes you may have and how much different items might cost. Can you encourage your child to find the coins to pay for something?
We have found counting in 2s, 5s and 10s has helped us calculate how many 2p, 5p and 10p we have in total.
We have been doing coin rubbings and looking at what is similar or different. We have looked at different ways to sort them and also finding the right coins to pay for things at the toy shop.
English and DT
The children were very excited to receive a letter from Mr Grinling the lighthouse keeper! His wife usually makes his lunch but she was going on holiday so he asked for our help. We had fun designing, making and eating our sandwiches. We then wrote a set of instructions about how to make our sandwich. The children used some great bossy verbs in their writing.
Year 1 have gone seagull crazy this week! Lots of the children picked them as their favourite characters in the ‘Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’, so this week we have made pesky seagulls! We have ordered and followed instructions. To check that we had ordered the steps of the instructions correctly we followed them and made our own flocks of seagulls – hope they don’t eat our lunch!
We all enjoyed our PE lesson with the cricket coach. We learnt lots of new skills.
Summer Reading Challenge
This year libraries across England are launching a reading challenge on 10th July. They are teaming up with WWF for a very special nature-themed challenge that will inspire children to stand up for the planet!
To register click on the link below or register at your local library.
We are very excited about our Sports Day on Tuesday 13th July. We have enjoyed practising all the races. Remember your child can come to school in their PE kit on Tuesday. On Sports Day your child will be competing in their hive colour team and need a top of this colour, so either blue, red, green or yellow. Don’t worry if you do not have any clothes of this colour as bibs can be provided by school.
Have a great weekend,
The Year 1 Team

We have continued our work based on the story ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We began the week by tasting some mustard! Look at their faces…no wonder the seagulls didn’t like it in the sandwiches!
The children have now all finished re-telling the story and are very proud of their mini books.
Days of the week and surnames
We have been learning how to spell the days of the week. The children have been writing them in a sentence.
Can your child spell them all? There is a game on Spelling Shed to help them practise spelling the days of the week. 1GK are in 8th place on the school leader board. Can 1B catch them up?
Our word of the week is surname. Some of the children don’t know their surname and many of them can’t write them. Please can you help your child practise at home – remembering that all names start with a capital letter.
We are continuing to learn about Place Value. We are comparing numbers by looking at the tens and ones in each number. Which symbol do we use? <, > or =. Remember the crocodile always eats the biggest/greatest number.
We challenged ourselves to use digit cards like the ones below to answer different questions. We had to be careful we only used the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. We discovered sometimes there could be lots of correct answers!
Finally we ordered numbers within 100. We look at the tens number first. Can you explain what the correct answer is?
We have been learning about the artist Andy Goldsworthy. He likes to use natural objects to create his pieces of art. Here we are having a go at making some natural art…
1B at Rodley Nature Reserve
We had a great time at the nature reserve. The highlight was all the tiny frogs hiding in the grass! We had to be very careful where we put our feet!
Today the children had a picnic for lunch and enjoyed them outside on the grass!
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
