Look what is happening in Year 1!

A busy week of learning in Year 1

September 17, 2021 at 1:24 pm

We have been talking about our families and the children all drew a picture of their family and labelled it. We have also begun our daily phonic lessons. This week we have revised ll, ff, ss, and zz.

We have been learning lots about each other through number. We have been discussing how old we are, how many people we have in our family, how many pets we have and how many teeth we have lost! This has helped us to practice counting and number formation.

This week we discussed what it was like to be a baby. They thought about what they needed when they were a baby and what they need now.

We had fun looking at the children’s baby photographs and talking about how they had changed. The children enjoy looking at our ‘Guess Who?’ displays.

On Tuesday, in our outdoor PE lesson, the children had fun experimenting with different ways of running. In our second PE lesson on Thursday we focused on gymnastics. We had fun exploring movements and balances in a wide way.

We have all enjoyed painting and drawing our self portraits. Can you guess who is who?

Friday Afternoons

This week we started our exciting Friday afternoon lessons. The children will take part in different activities each week. This half term they will do RE, a tree walk and computing.

ICT Passwords

In your child’s reading records there is a set of passwords and usernames for various ICT programs. Feel free to start exploring these with your child. We have allocated them some books to read on Bug Club. There is also a key word game on Spelling Shed.

Other Year 1 news…

We are visiting the school farm over the next few weeks – please can your child bring in a pair of wellington boots to leave at school. Please make sure that their name is in their boots.

The children were very excited about their first homework task in their learning logs!! This work is due in on Tuesday 28th September. Thank you for all your support with reading, phonics, spellings and learning logs – it really does make a difference.

We have confirmed our visit to Skipton Castle. 1B are going on Tuesday 16th November and 1GK are going on Thursday 18th November. We will send home more details in the coming weeks.

Have a super weekend.

A busy first week in Year 1

September 10, 2021 at 2:56 pm

All the children have settled in really well and are getting used to the routines of Year 1. They have been investigating their new classrooms and outdoor area. Which area has your child enjoyed exploring the most? Can your child remember which colour hive they are in?

Fun exploring in Year 1…

Reading and Library

We have heard all the children read and they have a new book to share with you at home. They have also chosen a library book – please share this with your child. The children will change their reading books and library books every Friday.

We have sent home a newsletter today and we hope this helps answer questions about PE kit and reading books. We will be doing PE next week, so please make sure that your child has a named PE kit in school. We will do PE outside, every Tuesday, if the weather is fine.

Just a reminder to please send in a photograph of your child when they were a baby or toddler. It will be used for the history lesson next week and will go on our ‘Guess Who?’ display. We can print them in school if you email them  – [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected]

Have a lovely weekend.

Arriving at school and home time

The Year 1 doors open at 8.50am and school starts at 9.00am. Home time is 3.15pm. All the children arrive and leave using the same door, so please bear with us at home time. We will speed up once we begin to recognise all your faces!

Please make sure your child has washed their hands thoroughly before they enter school, using our outdoor sinks. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

What will we be learning this half term?

In our English lessons we will enjoy reading ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and ‘Kitchen Disco’.

In maths we will be learning about place value and addition and subtraction.

In our science lessons we will be visiting the farm. We will be ‘plant detectives’ and make some delicious vegetable soup! Yum!

As part of our history lessons we will be thinking about how we have changed. Please can your child bring a photograph, to school, of when they were a baby or toddler. It will be used in our history lessons and will go on our ‘Guess Who?’ displays. We can print them in school if you email them using the following addresses… [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

In Year 1 the children participate in PE sessions twice a week. We will be doing PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school. If the weather is fine, we will do one of our PE sessions outside so please make sure that they have appropriate footwear. Please remember to label all their clothing, so that items don’t get lost!

The Classrooms

Have a look at some photographs of your new classroom. Where would you like to play? (You can click on a photograph to make it bigger.)

1GK areas…

1B areas…

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday morning. You will need to look for your peg label in the corridor, put your book bag and coat on your peg, find your drawer to put your fruit in and put your named water bottle by the sink. Then you can sit on the carpet and look at a book.
