This week in Year 2, we have been very busy writing our own poems. On Tuesday the children wrote their own Roald Dahl poems (see previous post) and today they have written their own fruit poems. The children got to taste lots of different fruits including papaya, pineapple, watermelon and passion-fruit. They then had to write a senses poem describing how their chosen fruit looks, smells, tastes, sounds and feels. We were very impressed at the use of similes and carefully chosen adjectives.
In maths, the children are learning about place value and partitioning two digit numbers into tens and units.
Here is a game you can play at home to support your child’s learning:

Today the whole school celebrated when two former pupils came back to share their achievements. Nile Wilson, one of Great Britain’s leading gymnasts, came into school to lead an assembly about putting in maximum effort and working hard to reach your goals. He showed off his unique bronze medal and his team kit. Wow! His sister also came back to her primary school to celebrate being accepted at Cambridge University. Well done! Many of the Year One staff even helped them on their journey to success.
Go for your goals Year One!

We have had a very busy three days! All the children have settled in really well and are getting used to the routines of Year 1. They have been exploring their new classrooms and outdoor area. Which area has your child enjoyed exploring the most? Can your child remember which hive they are in? Can they remember the Golden Rules?
We have enjoyed getting to know the children. We have heard all the children read and they have a new book to share with you at home. Please help your child change their books before and after school. Each child tried to write their first name and surname. Now they are in Year 1 it is important that they can hold a pencil with a triangular grip, write both names and form all the letters correctly.
We have also been to the school library and chosen a book – please share this with your child. We will change our library books every Friday.
We have sent home a newsletter and we hope this helps answer questions about PE kit and reading books. We will be doing PE next week so please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school.
It is going to be a fantastic year!
Have a lovely weekend.

We hope that you have all had a great holiday and are ready for an exciting year in 1GJ. We have been busy getting the classroom ready and planning lots of fun lessons and trips.
We are looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday morning. Can you remember where the Year 1 entrance is? You will need to look for your new peg label in the corridor and find your drawer to put your fruit in. Then you can sit on the carpet and look at a book.
Have a look at some of our new and exciting areas. Where would you like to play?
Our new class pets are ready too. Meet Oreo and Biscuit…
Have a lovely weekend.
